Placido Domingo, also known as Jose Placido Domingo Embil is a Spanish opera singer, as well as an administrator for the arts and a conductor. He’s among the most versatile of the four tenors, he could sing opera in Italian, English, Spanish, German, French, and Russian. He performed for audiences throughout the world, welcomed at the most prestigious venues. A film about the life of the accomplished artist would be fitting as he’s approaching the decade of his 80s. We have five young actors in mind whom we think would do a splendid job.
1. Jencarlos Canela
Jencarlos is a Cuban American actor who is also a singer. In fact, his musical career goes all the way back to the age of 12, when he performed as the band Boom Boom Pop’s lead singer. He went on to establish a brilliant career in acting as well, appearing in multiple Telemundo productions. He has a foot in both worlds of acting and music as a talented and accomplished singer. His 2011 performance of Mas Sabe el Diablo drew in a viewing audience of over a million viewers each night. Canela has a wonderful stage presence and we believe that he has the depth of emotion to portray the personality of a younger Placido Domingo.
2. Oscar Isaac
Oscar Isaac is an American actor who comes from rich Latino heritage. His mother is Guatemalan and his father is Cuban. Isaac has an impressive educational background. He was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School, from which he graduated in 2005. His acting debut was in a role he won in “The Nativity Story,” directed by Catherine Hardwicke. His career veered in the direction of typecasting him as a bully and abusive character, as we saw in “Sucker Punch” in 2011, as well as in “Drive.” He continued with this persona in “The Bourne Legacy,” but we’re seeing a turnaround as he appears with Maggie Gyllenhaal in “Won’t Back Down.” He’s set to star in the Coen Brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis,” as a folk singer, and he’ll co-star with Justin Timberlake for this role. Isaac is a versatile actor and we’d love to see his interpretation of the great Placido Domingo.
3. Gael Garcia Bernal
Gael Garcia Bernal is a popular Mexican actor who is known for his voice role as the main character in the Pixar film Coco. He also provides his voice for the movie track “Un Poco Loco.” He made an appearance at the 2018 Oscars where he joined Miguel and Natalia LaFourcade to perform an additional hit from the film for the viewing audience. He has the voice and the personality to back his dynamic acting style, and we’d love to see him tackle the role of the legendary Placido Domingo in a film about the famous artist’s life and music career. Bernal has a good idea of what the music world is like and we think that he has the ability to capture the essence of the man behind the music and deliver a believable performance on film.
4. Diego Luna
Diego Luna is another actor who is suitable to play the role of Placido Domingo. We got a good sample of his talent when he performed a cover of the popular hit song “Creep” of Radiohead fame. He delivered an excellent rendition which was used for the soundtrack to “The Book of Life.” Diego Luna, You might remember him from the multiple film appearances he’s made. Luna landed roles in “Milk,” “Open Range,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and several others. There is no doubt that he has tremendous acting ability. When you pair that with his musical talent, it’s a winning combination. We’d love to see him dive into the role of Placido Domingo because we believe that he could really get into the essence of the character and deliver a strong portrayal of the legendary artist.
5. Diego Boneta
Diego Boneta is another excellent choice to play the part of Placido Domingo in a film about his life. Diego was born on November 29, 1990, Diego Andres Gonzalez Boneta. He’s a popular Mexican actor and singer as well. He landed the starring role in the musical film “Rock of Ages” in 2012. He also starred in “Luis Miguel,” a biographical series which was released in 2018. His acting ability is superb, but he’s also an accomplished singer. His first album was released in 2005, under a self-title. The album contained his single Responde which was a big success. The album was released later in Brazilian and featured songs in Portuguese after the recording was completed in 2006. He released “Indigo,” his second album in 2008. Boneta has experience in both acting and musical/singing professions which make him an ideal candidate to play the part of a younger version of Placido Domingo.
Final thoughts
It’s time that a film is made to document the life and significant accomplishments of one of the greatest opera singers of our era. Placido Domingo has long been entertaining millions of his fans with performances throughout the entire world. The talented singer, conductor, and patron of the performing arts is aging and approaching the decade of his 80s, and we think that it is only fitting that a biopic is created while he’s still on the earth, to honor all of his contributions to the people of this world who have enjoyed his music throughout several decades. He is a legend whose story has not yet been told and preserved on film with a portrayal by one of the five talented actors discussed above. Boneta is or top pick because he most closely embodies the legend in his music, but any of these extremely talented young actors and musicians could render a just tribute to Domingo by capturing his story and details about his life in a movie.
