A lot of us have grown up watching men like Christopher Plummer throughout the years and seeing him in a few different lights, such as the kindly older gentleman that seems almost like he could be anyone’s grandfather and be among the nicest people in the world. But he’s also managed to play characters are so increasingly vile that it’s a wonder that he could ever turn around andbe a nice guy again. That’s the greatness of Plummer in that he knows his craft inside and out and is always striving to do something greater, something better than he did before. As one of the elder statesmen of the business he’s most definitely someone that deserves the distinction and respect of having been in show business for so long that he’s become something of a legend. To consider him as anything less would be an insult to be honest.
Here are his five best movies.
5. Dolores Claiborne
Mark Felice of The Cavalier Daily isn’t really joking when he states that this movie has kind of been forgotten since in light of the many other Stephen King stories that have been unleashed on the public, Dolores Claiborne is one that a lot of people enjoyed but kind of pushed aside in favor of the rest. King’s stories are so macabre most times that the more supernatural and more grisly are usually taken first while those like this movie are seen as better on paper than on the big screen. But thanks to Kathy Bates and the dogged determination of Plummer’s character this movie was actually very enjoyable.
4. The Sound of Music
Tom Breihan of AV Club is one among the many that believe that this movie has successfully withstood the test of time and they’re not wrong since there are plenty of sentimental individuals that know how to fully promote that which they deem as classic. The movie itself is actually quite impressive if you enjoy this type of story, and it’s been treated with a great deal of respect throughout the years when it comes to the legacy it left behind. Those that participated in the movie have gone their separate ways a long time ago, but you can imagine that they still have every reason to say thank you to a movie such as this for helping to further their careers.
3. Beginners
You can imagine that it might be something of a shock to hear your father say that he’s coming out some time after your mother has passed, but honestly it seems to bring Oliver closer to his father as they begin to experience a surge in their relationship as Hal becomes more honest with himself. This seems like something very monumental to come out with in one’s later years, but perhaps it was something he kept bottled up for a long time to seem normal. Honestly it almost seems as though this revelation was something that needed to happen for Hal to feel complete and at peace before the end came, in which case it was a perfect plot point that drove the story in the direction that was needed.
2. All the Money in the World
Julie Miller of Vanity Fair did some fact checking before writing on this subject but the movie, as we all know, was meant to be an adaptation of the story that actually happened and as a result it wasn’t bound to make everyone happy. It likely didn’t make Kevin Spacey fans happy since Plummer was brought in to replace Spacey after the scandal that saw Spacey lose a great deal when he was charged with sexual misconduct along with many other people during this time. The movie went off without much of a hitch after the reshoots it would seem, but there was still a good deal of controversy attached to it.
1. The Insider
It’s amazing to what lengths some corporate entities will go to in order to protect their secrets and possibly keep people silent when they know that said people can incriminate them with damning evidence. Thinking of Big Tobacco as a dangerous entity is only difficult until you realize that when it comes to making money and corporate interests that many people will do whatever it takes to to cover their butts, and that includes going beyond lines that many people would never think of crossing. This movie along with a few others have been seen as highly controversial since some believe that they paint an increasingly negative and unreal picture of what can happen when people don’t play the game that their bosses want. But the truth is that if you don’t toe the line with some people they’re bound to remind you just where you stand.
Christopher Plummer is a man that’s been around along enough to see the business change, and he’s still here after all of it.
