Don’t Call Me Angel: No Worries There

Don’t Call Me Angel: No Worries There

So to be clear, no one is expecting Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, or Lana Del Ray to be perfect little angels in the video or in life since at least two of the three have proven that this isn’t entirely possible thanks to the antics they’ve pulled throughout the years. But Michele Mendez of Elite Daily going on to say that his is one of the best songs to come out in a while is kind of hard to stomach largely because, well, it’s really not that good. From the jarring music and beats to the fact that it almost seems like a feminist’s dream to showcase three strong and very independent women proving that they don’t need a man and don’t want a man to do anything for them, this video is for the most part the kind of thing that works against equality and seeing women as equal to men. Instead it kind of signifies that the fight is still very much on for gender equality despite how much women have achieved throughout the years. The trio make it pretty plain with their lyrics and visuals that they don’t want to be seen as anything but strong women, which is great to be honest, but they tend to do it and say as much in a way that seems to indicate that men need to push off and realize that women don’t need them. Maybe that’s my perception or the perception of many others, but it seems a little more antagonistic than it needs to be. We get it, you’re strong, you’re tough, you’re not Snow White in need of a strong male figure, point taken.

As you can imagine writers like Jonah Waterhouse from Elle have been all over this since the idea that three women in the prime of their careers are not only cutting a music video and song for the upcoming reboot to Charlie’s Angels, but are tackling a subject that seems to be ongoing as women continue to remind men in various ways that they’re stronger than we think they are. Didn’t that message get received a while back? It would almost seem as though they’re not content to deliver the message but have to continually remind us by using the kind of imagery that’s seen in the video of Miley beating up a man bound to a chair and Lana tossing a very deadly knife directly at the crotch region of a target. It might seem a little paranoid and could possibly garner the kind of comments that would gladly shred any possible misogynist that wanted to speak up, but since I’m not a misogynist and can read between the lines and am definitely not paranoid, this video seems like a pretty big stab at men and the idea that even backing off and encouraging women to be strong and independent would be met with a reminder that the future is female and men better get used to it. Sorry, I had to go laugh for a moment at that one.

It’s not that amazing to think that the video has garnered a great deal of attention and likes from the many fans that each woman has but at this point it would almost seem that a lot of people aren’t going to be willing to point out the flaws or that the music is simply not that great. The sycophants that exist in show business and around the internet seem to have no end, particularly when it comes to women trolling men these days and then having the audacity to claim that men are misogynists if they don’t happen to like or agree with something that’s feminine. Even funnier however is the fact that while they’re claiming to be strong and independent women, supposedly that don’t like to be seen as sex symbols, they’ll still gladly use their sexuality to the greatest effect in order to gain more attention and make sure that people see them as sexy and independent at the same time. It’s a back and forth game that really doesn’t seem to have any winner and it’s extremely amusing. While Charlie’s Angels is already garnering a very mixed feeling between those that are expecting it to be great and those that are just tired of seeing it dragged across the big screen, this video is another play on that theme that seems to be increasing the idea that women don’t need men at all and are in fact superior in a few ways. Again, that might be perception or it could be reality depending on who you talk to.

Fans of the three singers are no doubt going to say this video and the song is great, but those of us that have the nerve to say otherwise, like myself and Charles Pulliam-Moore of Gizmodo, are likely to be shouted down since that seems to be the way things get pushed these days. It’s okay to say that something isn’t that great, honestly.
