Home Alone (and Others) Will Be Getting a Disney + Reboot

Does anyone else feel like shaking their head as we wonder what Disney is up to and why? The mere mention that Home Alone, along with a few other movies, will be getting a reboot when Disney+ launches its service in November is enough to make your childhood tremble since the era of the reboot and remake has been running rampant over a great many movies and shows that we kind of thought would be left alone, well, forever. Back in the day Home Alone was one of the most popular movies around and as a result it was one of those that many of us remember fondly. While some think the second movie wasn’t quite as good others might disagree, but a lot of folks probably agree without a doubt that the third movie was pretty forgettable since the studio moved on from Kevin and went with another kid. Some folks like Ryan Scott of MovieWeb may wonder if Macaulay Culkin could somehow be brought back into the fold to make this even more special but in all honesty it’s kind of hard to imagine that Disney is even going there in the first place.

It’s easy to assume that we’ll watch it just to see how the reboot stacks up to the original, but the sheer audacity that Disney has at this moment isn’t too surprising since the money that the corporation has been making since taking on one property after another has likely made it bold enough to think that we’ll simply accept anything. They’re not wrong unfortunately as many people are already willing and waiting to sign up for Disney+ and will be looking to binge-watch just about anything and everything they can in order to fully experience the added content and favorites they’ve been waiting for. So far the news of what’s coming and what can be expected eventually has a lot of people chomping at the bit to get their subscription and there’s no doubt that Disney will see their subscription numbers explode come November since people just HAVE to see what’s new and exciting. But still, as Marisa Lascala from Good Housekeeping might agree, remaking Home Alone seems like a sad day for those of us that still remember the first movie, and the joy that came from watching it in the theater.

In truth it’s nothing to cry over since Home Alone will still be what we remember, but the reboot so far has a lot working against it since the emotions of many are running high after hearing that Home Alone will in fact be getting the reboot treatment. It’s not alone in this as Night at the Museum, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Cheaper by the Dozen will be receiving reboots as well. In a way it almost seems as though Disney is wanting to put their own stamp on the movies now that they own them and aren’t content to simply claim that these movies are now a part of their stable. From an opinionated standpoint that seems rather egotistical, not to mention presumptuous, but seeing as how we’re the consumers and Disney is one of the biggest entertainment providers in the world it’s easy to see what we’re going to do. We’re going to watch whatever they pump out until enough people finally say enough and decide to hop the fence to see what’s on the other side. Unfortunately for many of us it would seem that Disney might own the whole block at some point since the corporation has been pretty adamant about taking control of as much attention as it can when it comes to movies and TV.

The lot of us that think this is a bad idea should probably take a step back and remember that things do tend to move forward and despite the fact that we can remember having a good childhood in part thanks to these movies there’s always a chance that someone with a different vision could come up with something better. Of course it’s hard not to laugh when saying that but at the same time it’s enough to think that it might be worth it to at least give the reboots a try. After all, there have been a few reboots and remakes throughout the history of cinema that have been fairly decent and don’t completely muck up the idea of the original. Though getting Macaulay Culkin back does seem like a stretch even if he’s not doing much these days. Then there’s the idea of who’s going to be cast for the reboots and whether or not they’re really up to the task. You can bet that most of the original actors won’t be coming back, or might get a cameo at the very best. Until this happens though you can expect to hear more and more rumors about it as November will come up quickly.
