10 Things You Didn’t know about Mike Mignola

Mike MIgnola Hellboy

It’s funny to wonder how many people really sit back and wonder about those that create their favorite shows, movies, or even comic books. The average individual might think about these people when they’re directed to do so, but it feels easy to say that otherwise they get left behind and sometimes forgotten unless they become that big. Mike Mignola is someone that a lot of people might know little to nothing about, but in truth he’s responsible for giving people one of their biggest heroes of all time and one that’s been in the news for the last few years now. His creation, Hellboy, has been a favorite of many fans and has managed to create quite the buzz when he was first introduced by Ron Perlman on screen, and then by David Harbour. Whether or not we’ll see the hero step off the pages again is hard to say, but at the very least we can thank Mike for bringing him into being in the first place.

Here are a few things about Mike you might not have known.

10. He’s written for several movies during his career.

Prolific sounds like the wrong word when describing just how much Mike has done in his career since his pen hasn’t seemed to stop throughout the years. The amount of work he’s done for various companies is simply astounding.

9. Mike has worked for DC and Marvel throughout the years.

This seems to be a common thing that many artists and writers do as several folks have gone back and forth between Marvel and DC. It’s interesting when each company is accused of ‘stealing’ ideas that it might actually come from some of those that go back and forth trying to take some of their work with them.

8. He’s done work for hire jobs and did this for a while.

This might sound like he was a freelancer, but the big difference is that freelancers get to take the credit for their work, while those sign up to work made for hire jobs end up selling their work, all of it, and don’t get the credit. It’s a hard way to do business since it’s selling your work so that someone else can reap the benefits. But for money, when it’s tight, some folks end up doing this to stay fed and pay the bills.

7. He remained uncredited for the Hellboy reboot.

There’s not a lot of explanation as to why this happened or if it was his decision or not, but he didn’t get a credit for this movie even though he worked on it. Maybe he wanted to remain slightly apart from the movie, who knows.

6. Mike has won several awards throughout his career.

At the very least Mike has been able to reap the rewards for his work for so many years, and the number of awards that he’s gained for one project or another is simply amazing. One can imagine that if he displays them all they’d take up an entire wall at this point.

5. The list of comics he’s worked on is quite extensive.

You’d have a tough time reading them all in a month’s time, that’s for certain. Mike has done a great amount of work throughout his career and has brought to life a good number of very interesting characters that are still around today. He’s even worked on a few that were established before he was allowed to work on them.

4. He’s helped to write several novels as well.

Being that he’s worked on so many different comics it’s easy to think that he’s been a big help in bringing a few novels to life as well, though he’s always been a co-author it would seem. Maybe he has aspirations to write his own book one day, but so far it’s great that he’s been seen to stretch his storytelling talents.

3. Apparently a lot of the Hellboy character was based on his father.

This is kind of interesting since it makes a person wonder just what kind of man his father was since Hellboy isn’t that bad of a character despite his attitude and rough look. It’d be interesting to hear more about this little factoid.

2. His net worth is around $20 million.

A lot of this has to come from the massive amount of money that’s been poured into Hellboy since while it’s easy to think that a good amount has come from his skill and time put in, it’s still easier to believe that the big red devil was a huge part of this.

1. He does have a presence on social media.

This seems only normal since he likely has quite a few dedicated fans that have come to love what he does and are almost always willing to see anything else he’s done.

Comic book writers/artists are popular too for those that might not believe it.
