5 Things You Didn’t Know About Andrew Niccol

While the actors and actresses in Hollywood get all of the glory and open exposure, the people behind the scenes have a great influence on the success of the television programming and cinematic films that launch and sustain the careers of actors and actresses. Screenwriters, producers, and directors play a massive role in the development production and presentation of visual entertainment, but only a handful have received international acclaim for the work that they have done. Most of these geniuses remain behind the scenes creating magic. One screenwriter that has experienced a great deal of success is Andrew M. Niccol, a New Zealand screenwriter, producer, and director that has an impressive resume

Since you are probably unfamiliar with Andrew, we decided to share a few facts about this talented screenwriter to help you get to know him just a bit more.

1. He Was Born and Reared in New Zealand

Andrew was born June 10, 1964, in Paraparaumu, Kapiti Coast, New Zealand, but he grew up in Auckland, and it does not take but a second after meeting him to pick it up in his accent. He would complete his basic schooling while in New Zealand but would leave for London, England in order to pursue his career in directing. He would spend the next 10 years breaking into the industry.

2. He Directed Television Ads Before He Finally Directed His First Movie

As is almost always the case when breaking into a challenging industry like directing and film production, Andrew had to pay his dues, and that he did – spending his first 10 years in London directing television ads before he finally had the opportunity to direct his first film. He admits that directing television ads not only helped him refine his skills, but it trained him on how to be persistent and patient when things don’t happen overnight.

3. He is a Family Man

There is no shortage of rumors and stories about individuals in the entertainment industry having these illicit and torrid affairs – leading to the destruction of families and high divorce rates. Well, it seems that Andrew’s New Zealand upbringing established strong family values. He has been married to his wife Rachel Roberts since 2002, and they have three beautiful children, Mia (17), Jack (14) and Ava (9). Despite his grueling schedule he still finds time for his family.

4. He Uses His Films to Engage Social, Cultural and Political Issues

There are some screenwriters and producers that avoid social and political issues altogether. They don’t have the stomach for the conflict and the pushback that is inevitable. It seems that Andrew lives for that type of opportunity with the vast majority of his work addressing social and political issues that others tend to avoid. He admits what he does for a living provides him with a powerful platform from which to address those issues that matter to him.

5. He is the Genius Behind The Terminal

Not only did Andrew produce The Terminal, but he is the genius that came up with the story. While directing duties were handed over to Steven Spielberg, Andrew was still heavily involved in the overall production of the film, which did well at the box office, but more than anything demanded critical thought from its viewers. This is what Andrew is such a genius at – making people look beyond the surface to find the deeper meaning of things.
