Bird Box is a post-apocalyptic horror movie that was released on Netflix in 2018. In it, a mysterious threat causes people who see it to commit suicide. As a result, a collection of survivors have holed up in a house with no way to see outwards. Furthermore, when they venture out in search of food as well as other necessities, they are forced to wear blindfolds, which protect them from the cause of the apocalypse that has overtaken the world but not the other problems that have since popped up. On the whole, Bird Box wasn’t exactly met with universal praise. However, it was entertaining enough that there are bound to be viewers who are curious about the similar movies that can be found out there. Here are five examples of movies that people might like if they liked Bird Box:
Cargo
Cargo is an Australian-made movie that might interest fans of Bird Box because it shares a similar setup of an adult seeking to get a child to safety in the middle of an apocalypse. However, it should be mentioned that Cargo isn’t a horror movie so much as a drama that makes use of a horror movie scenario. Story-wise, the movie is about a man who is seeking to get his baby daughter to some kind of safety after an unfortunate incident results in the breakup of his small family, with the result that he comes to meet an Aboriginal girl who is attempting to protect her father who has become infected. Overall, while Cargo is a zombie movie, it isn’t really what most people would expect upon hearing those words, meaning that it can come as a pleasant surprise for people who are fed up with zombie movie conventions. This is particularly true if they like a strong focus on the characters as well as their emotions, which is one of the most notable characteristics of Cargo.
It Follows
Modern horror movies are seeing a great deal of innovation, thus making for a wider range of stories than ever before. However, there are times when people will want to see something that is more reminscent of classic horror movies, as shown by It Follows. In short, It Follows features some kind of shapeshifting supernatural monster that pursues particular individuals, who can pass this curse on to other individuals by having sex with them. There are people who have wondered about this being a metaphor for sexually transmitted diseases, but there are people involved in its making who have said that it is nothing more than nightmare logic reproduced for the screen. Whatever the case, It Follows is a good example of a modern horror movie making use of a classic horror setup, meaning that it can be worth checking out.
The Mist
The Mist is the movie based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. Moreover, it is one of the better adaptations of King’s works, which should come as welcome news for people who are hesitant because of the rather uneven quality of said movies. Content-wise, The Mist has some similarities with Bird Box because it is focused on what ordinary people are willing to do when they are thrust into extraordinary circumstances. In further detail, The Mist sees a group of people trapped within a supermarket when the titular phenomenon descends upon their entire town, with the result that the human inhabitants are now vulnerable to a wide range of extradimensional monsters. Over the course of the movie, it is made clear that the supermarket is no safe refuge, both because of internal threats and because of external threats. With that said, interested individuals should be warned that The Mist ends on a very different note from its source material, which can be interpreted as being either darker or lighter depending on one’s perspective.
A Quiet Place
A Quiet Place is an excellent choice of movie to compare with Bird Box. This is because The Quiet Place is another post-apocalyptic horror movie in which the characters have to prevent themselves from doing something very commonplace in order to avoid the threat that has brought about the collapse of human civilization. In Bird Box, this was sight, but in The Quiet Place, this is speech. For those who are curious, a meteor has brought monsters to the Earth in The Quiet Place. Said monsters have extraordinary hearing, which enables them to home in on sounds made by humans when those sounds aren’t covered up by something louder. Even worse, they are either invulnerable or so tough that they might as well as be invulnerable, meaning that a physical confrontation isn’t viable for the characters with the resources available to them at the start of the movie. In any case, The Quiet Place is very similar to Bird Box in that it is focused on characters who have made huge changes to their habits in order to survive in their changed circumstances. Moreover, it even has a mixed cast of adult and child characters, thus providing a somewhat similar but not perfectly identical scenario that should appeal to people who liked Bird Box.
The Road
The Road is one more post-apocalyptic movie in which a father and their child are seeking to find safety of some kind in a world that has undergone an apocalyptic event. The exact cause of the problem isn’t elaborated upon. However, it can be argued that this makes the whole thing worse rather than better because there is no face for the threat that is hovering over the characters, which in turn, means that there is no intelligent force that can be assigned blame. To some extent, this oppressive mood runs throughout the rest of the movie as well, not least because of the trauma that accumulates at a steady pace. Still, there is a reason that The Road has managed to win widespread accolade, meaning that if people don’t mind a bit of emotional bruising when it comes to their viewing material, said movie can make for a very good choice indeed.
