There was something magical about the Jackson 5 when they were first formed and put out for people to hear. The sound they created was picked up far and wide by those that wanted to hear something extraordinary and for a time it was good since they had a following, a name that everyone knew, and careers that didn’t seem in danger of going anywhere. But somewhere along the line the wheels fell off and a few of them started going their own ways and things just fell apart. How it happened is still up for debate today since a lot of people will claim that this or that led to their downfall, but in truth things might have worked out like this anyway since the talent they had wasn’t fleeting, but the group certainly was since a group can only hold so much talent before someone decides to go it on their own.
Here are a few of their songs that are still found today in movies and TV.
5. Love, Simon – Someday At Christmas
A lot of people want to be happy and Simon is no different. The only problem is that he doesn’t want to come to anyone with the fact that he’s homosexual for fear of people rejecting him and for the harassment that might follow. So thinking he decides to help out another person with his own problem, though he’s been blackmailed into it since the person happens to know he’s gay. When things go south they go quickly though when the person in question decides to turn on Simon and out him to the whole school. It takes a while for him to gain the trust of those he cares about back, but by the end of the movie he’s figured out that no one cares if he’s gay so long as he’s honest with them.
4. Turbo – Goin’ Back to Indiana
It’s one of the more unlikely films you’ll ever see since when you look at snails you don’t generally think about speed. But Turbo is special since his DNA has been changed by NOS and as a result he’s able to keep pace with just about anything on wheels. The next logical stop of course would be to take him to one of the biggest races in the country and have him take on the top racers for the title, though one has to wonder just how that would work since there’s really no precedent when it comes to qualifying a non-human that won’t be driving a car and therefore isn’t exactly the norm for a regular race.
3. Lip Sync Battle – ABC
It’s always interesting to see what selections the celebrities that come on stage decide to dance to since then you’ve got to wonder just what kind of background they’re going to use and what the backup dancers are going to be dressed like. You have to admit that a lot of them do really get into it and the stage settings are pretty innovative for the songs. That being said, yes, a lot of the times the dancers are sexualized to a great degree, but given that it’s still usually not that crazy it’s a lot of fun to watch and a great show to put on for those that find it entertaining. After all it’s a show that’s built around lip syncing, so of course it’s going to get a little bizarre.
2. Billy Madison – ABC
Speaking of over the top and out of control, Billy Madison is one of those films that makes you wonder just what in the heck you’re watching at times. The plot is obvious enough, Billy is kind of a doofus that loves to drink and chase imaginary penguins, but when he learns that the worst person in the world to inherit his father’s business is going to be allowed to take over he decides to apply himself and prove that he’s worthy of his father’s fortune instead. Along the way there’s a lot of hilarity and even humility as he’s reminded that he’s no longer king of the school like he used to think he was. But in the end he learns a pretty valuable lesson.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 1 – I Want You Back
Somehow everyone loves to watch Groot dance. It was nice to see that an aspect of him made it after he sacrificed himself to save his friends, but since then he’s been more of a quirky character than anything up until Infinity War when he finally got to head into battle with Thor and Rocket and proved to be tougher than a lot of their companions. Groot is that character you can’t help but like but still wonder why at times since he’s tough, he’s dangerous, but he still seems to have the mind of a child at times.
The Jackson 5 were great in their time, there’s no doubt of that.
