Ever since Lucasfilm and Disney decided to awaken the force, a bit of fresh air has been breathed into the Star Wars franchise. With the addition of Rogue One to the series fans will get to see the very first stand alone movie in the Star Wars cinematic realm. And affter Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will came another stand alone feature about Han Solo and Chewbacca in their younger days, and after that there’s no telling what will come next.
As long as these films focus on turning out the type of adventures seen in The Force Awakens and don’t get too caught up in Star Wars cannon and history, these should be exciting movies that will bring even more interest to the franchise. While we’re all wondering how things will go after Rogue One hits theaters, here are five Star Wars spinoff films that would be well worth developing.
1. Yoda before he was a Jedi Master
Who wouldn’t want to see a spinoff focusing on Yoda’s route to becoming a Jedi Master when he was younger? Even those who aren’t die hard Star Wars fans would have their interest piqued if this movie as announced, as Yoda’s character is one of the most iconic in pop culture. Such a film would give Yoda some long awaited backstory and if the focus was on his early training that would be ideal.
Writers would need to reach way back in Yoda’s timeline, before the Star Wars prequels that we already have. Of course, his entire origins story would make for too long a film and wouldn’t be necessary at this point. However, picture a flick that’s told in the vein of a timeless Samurai tale. It would be an epic hit and would more likely than not become a Yoda fan favorite.
2. A standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi film
Another hugely popular Star Wars character is Obi-Wan Kenobi, and there have already been efforts to delve into his backstory through the Star Wars comics and Clone Wars. However, a full-fledged film about Obi-Wan would do him justice and provide something that franchise fans have been anticipating for decades — a full fledged movie is in order and has been a long time coming.
Such a film would be a prime opportunity to fill in gaps with Obi-Wan’s backstory, and if more detail about the time that he spent secluded on Tattooine were included in the movie that would be an awesome bonus. The character has gone through so many transitions that there are many angles to take, and because he’s such an accomplished and well traveled character a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie would also provide the opportunity for great cameos.
3. A young Leia movie
A movie with Leia in a different time, maybe with different hair? The latter doesn’t have to be a sure thing, but what is certain is that a Star Wars spinoff with Leia front and center would do well at the box office. Centering the film on Leia’s life when she was in her 20s would be the best plot line to take, because when you get beyond that you have to deal with her evolution into someone knee deep in the politics of the Star Wars universe.
A plot that falls in the time span between Return of the Jedi and Rogue One’s predecessor, The Force Awakens, would be a good spot. And, contrary to what some fans think, keeping Han Solo out of the movie would be the smart thing to do — think of how often he’s eclipsed her character and run the risk of upstaging her on-screen appearances. Regardless the approach that this film takes, fans have been waiting to see how Leia would use the Force for a very long time. It doesn’t matter what explanation J.J. Abrams has given for her not going there yet, we all know she has the ability.
4. The Old Republic
If this Star Wars spinoff ever comes to fruition, the best thing to do would be to not simply adapt the video games for the big screen. What many Star Wars devotees really want is a movie that takes risks and departs from everything we’re already used to seeing at the theater. Go back to the old Star Wars canon, which takes place 3,500 or so years before the franchise’s original trilogy, and you’ll have tons of material to tell an amazing story.
Essentially, it would be like a new world being established that’s in such a distant time that it doesn’t conflict with canon. At this point, Star Wars as a brand is big enough that it can afford to go out on a limb and take a chance on some ideas that are truly innovative. A film about The Old Republic would certainly fall into that category and be a nice change.
5. Boba Fett featured on the big screen
There are already rumors that this movie could be coming after the Han Solo standalone film, and some have even said that it was supposed to come out in place of the latter. In any case, it definitely needs to happen and Lucasfilm can’t possibly lose with a Boba Fett feature. It was a bit of a letdown when Boba Fett wasn’t apart of The Force Awakens at all, but it definitely isn’t because there’s no fan interest in the character. Quite the contrary, people are clamoring to see a film that explores the world of the Bounty Hunters’ Guild and what its like to live in the grittier underground world. Think Star Wars meets classic mob movie, and then imagine the scores of people lining up to see it.
Word is that a Boba Fett movie has been in the works for years, but conflicts between filmmakers, writers, and even actors simply hasn’t been sorted out. Whatever has been going on over at Disney and Lucasfilm that’s delayed this movie needs to get sorted out, because this would be a potential gold mine. Not only that, but fans are missing out on what could be an incredible Star Wars spinoff.
