10 Things You Didn’t Know about Gil Kenan

There’s most likely a lot more that can be said about Gil Kenan that can be found on the internet since for the most part his bio is kind of truncated and his various pages don’t offer a whole lot. Ambitious and ready to go seems like it would be a good description of him, though at this point in his career he doesn’t seem to have done too much. Having started when he did you might think that he needs to bump his numbers up a bit but then you might want to stop and consider that a director that just pushes out one lame film after another isn’t going to be noted as being one of the best or even among the most talented. It’s one thing to direct great movies but it’s another to just keep swinging for the fences and missing horribly with each attempt. It might be good practice but at the same time it allows a person to dig a hole in which both they and their reputation tend to reside. So it could be that Gil is being selective, which would be a wise move considering that he has had at least one film that’s been quite popular.

Here are a few things you probably didn’t know about him.

10. His career started in 2002.

Given that he’s been around for more than a decade and closer to two you might think that he should have done more by now. But quite honestly picking his spots, or his movies, is a wise idea since it keeps him from going down as one of the more impulsive and less productive directors.

9. He made the remake of Poltergeist.

There were a lot of mixed feelings about this film since it did and didn’t keep to the source material. A lot of things in it did manage to bring back the old memories of the original film but some of the newer effects and visuals turned a few people of since they felt a little too contrived. The story was still great.

8. He received an MFA in animation in 2002.

So he’s had the education and he’s proven that he knows what he’s doing. He even has the experience under his belt now. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more from Gil in the future as he continues to build upon his career.

7. Monster House was his directorial debut.

A spirit-infested house that eats people by swallowing them whole is just the kind of idea that would appeal to kids and it was a pretty big success to be honest. In fact he’s been his biggest highlight of his career so far and there are people eagerly waiting for him to repeat this success in some way.

6. He walked away from a project in 2015.

He had a chance to direct the film Five Nights At Freddy’s, but he turned it down for his own reasons. Sometimes a director just doesn’t feel as though something clicks between them and the movie and the wisest decision is to step away from the uncertainty. Better a regret than a poorly-made film.

5. He directed City of Ember.

Despite having a great story and plot this movie wasn’t exactly met with glowing praise. Perhaps there was too much difference between the book and the movie for people to reconcile with it or perhaps there was just something missing that didn’t quite make it pop the way it was supposed to. But the idea of being stuck underground as a civilization for 200 years is an interesting plot that no doubt made the book quite popular.

4. He directed an episode of Scream.

It’s hard to think that a movie that spawned three sequels would be able to make it on TV but some Scream became a show that people tended to like and would actually turn on to watch. Everyone has their own thing and this happens to be the thing for many people.

3. He attended the University of California in Los Angeles.

It seems like a lot of famous people have come out of the University of California, so perhaps it’s one of the more attractive schools for its programs, but also somewhere that people might go to find a career.

2. His filmography isn’t that extensive yet.

This point seems to be need to made over and over even if it doesn’t change much. What he has done is still very provocative and deserves a lot of credit since he has been praised for at least one of his films and at least given credit for the others.

1. His social media following is pretty thin.

One might think he doesn’t pay much attention to social media or perhaps isn’t really up on it since he’s one of the few that have gained this much attention without having more than ten thousand followers.

Just keep watching, he could easily surprise the audience with another big success.
