10 Things You Didn’t Know about Genndy Tartakovsky

The funny thing about Genndy Tartokovsky is that he fully admits as a kid that he couldn’t draw to save his life. He was highly interested in it, but he couldn’t do it. Of course that’s were practice and desire come in as they can very easily take over for a lack of natural skill and train the body and mind to come up with designs and pictures that are believable and altogether real since the artis will have finally learned how get around the idea not having natural talent by building talent instead. It’s a much longer and arduous process at times but at the end, just like anything, it creates a sense of accomplishment that allows the individual to feel like they’ve learned something and become all the better for it.

Here are a few things you might not have known about Genndy.

10. He’s an animator.

Unless you’re a superfan, animators don’t tend to get much attention as they’re the guys that do a lot of the grunt work and make sure that the animated features come out the way they’re supposed to. Their work is usually the reason why we get to enjoy cartoons in the first place as they have a passion to draw and a love for entertaining people from behind the scenes.

9. He was inspired to draw from a young age.

As it was stated above he couldn’t draw for anything when he was younger, but after attending two different colleges where his passion for drawing finally culminated into a skill that allowed him to really dig into what he wanted to do it became obvious what he was good at and what direction he should take with his life.

8. He’s had a hand in creating several interesting cartoons.

He’s been more than just an animator when it comes to various other cartoons, he’s been a director as well and a storyboard artist, producer, and screenwriter. So he’s had to wear a few different hats during his line of work and it seems to have agreed with him.

7. He’s worked on Dexter’s Laboratory.

Not too surprisingly this was one of his projects in college that eventually became a staple of Cartoon Network. The story of Dexter could be kind of the early version of Stewie from Family Guy if you really look at it since the youngest kid in the family has a secret laboratory and two clueless parents, as well as an annoying elder sibling that gets in his way a lot.

6. He’s worked on Samurai Jack.

Samurai Jack is another CN cartoon that a lot of people watched as samurais were a big trend at one point and time in just about everything. In fact it seems like they still are, though popular media tends to pick and choose what facets of the samurai they really pay attention to.

5. He’s worked on The Clone Wars.

George Lucas actually hired him to direct the Clone Wars, which seems like it was a good idea since the series went off without much of a hitch most of the time and managed to entertain a lot of eager Star Wars fans that wanted to see the gaps between the movies filled in as much as possible. All in all he’s had a very successful and impressive career for much of his life and still continues to work on what he loves.

4. His career started back in 1991.

If you can still love your job after well over two decades then you’ve done something right. There’s no doubt that some of the roads he had travel to his current position weren’t all that easy. And it can be assumed that his job isn’t all sunshine and rainbows even now, but it would also seem that he’s still very passionate about what he’s doing, so that’s a big plus.

3. At one point he was working on a new Popeye cartoon.

The project was first thought up in 2012 and in 2014 he announced that he had test footage that could be shown. Unfortunately by 2015 it was seen that he’d moved on from the project and left it to sit. Maybe it will be revisited, but who knows at this point.

2. He started off at Hanna-Barbera.

Hanna-Barbera was big back in the day, remember? They had some of the most classic cartoons and some of the best characters that kids just loved to watch. But like all things their time came and went and it was out with old and in with the new. Thankfully that didn’t include Genndy, as the guy’s just too good to ditch for newer talent.

1. As of now he works at Sony Pictures Animation.

It was stated in 2016 that Genndy no longer worked for Sony Pictures Animation, but by 2017 he was back. Perhaps they figured that letting him go wasn’t that good of an idea after all and decided to bring him back.

That idea seems a lot more sound.
