You might remember Jake Harris from the television show Deadliest Catch. For a number of years, he was on the fishing vessel Cornelia Marie with his older brother Josh and dad Phil. At the time, his dad was a legend in the crab fishing industry. Appearing on Deadliest Catch only elevated his status in the eyes of people that knew nothing about fishing as well. Unfortunately, you might also remember that Phil Harris passed away several years ago. Since that time, Jake Harris has struggled with a lot of different issues. For a time, he remained on the Cornelia Marie but hasn’t been seen in a few years. Below are 10 things that you probably don’t know about him, especially in more recent years.
1. He won’t be returning to Deadliest Catch
When he first disappeared from the show, it was reportedly because he was in rehab for drug addiction. Everyone hoped that he would eventually return, and most people expected him to return to the Cornelia Marie. However, this was something that never came to pass and since that time, both he and his brother have revealed that he won’t be returning to the show in any capacity.
2. There’s a better than average chance that he won’t be going fishing again
The truth is, he hasn’t been on a fishing vessel in several years. Part of the reason that he’s apprehensive to go fishing again is because he’s afraid that it’s the very lifestyle that let him into drug addiction in the first place. Therefore, he feels like it’s a better idea to avoid it altogether and pursue other professional endeavors that don’t involve fishing.
3. He was once beaten, robbed, and left for dead
A few years ago, he decided to take a ride home with a couple that he didn’t know. Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse very quickly. The couple beat him severely, robbed him and then threw him out by the side of the road, leaving him for dead. He was severely injured, suffering a cracked skull and a severe head injury. Fortunately, he was resilient enough that he could recover completely.
4. He’s been in trouble with the law
He’s never made a secret out of the fact that he’s been in a lot of trouble for drug addiction over the years. In fact, he was once found to be in possession of methamphetamine and was convicted for it. He’s openly admitted that he had a problem with drug addiction for a number of years and it’s something that he is still working on each and every day.
5. His dad’s death hit him much harder than most people realize
Most people don’t realize how hard he really took the death of his dad, Phil Harris. This is largely because he was always seen as more of a class clown than anything else. He has a habit of rarely showing his more sensitive side to anyone, leading people to believe that he wasn’t as deeply affected by the death of his dad as some others might have been. The truth is, he’s been somewhat lost on a personal level since the death of his father, and he is still trying to put the pieces back together again.
6. He was once arrested for stealing a car
While it’s true that he was arrested for the theft of an automobile, there’s more to the story than that. The car belonged to his girlfriend. The two were staying at a motel together when they got into a heated argument. Since it was the only car available, he grabbed the keys, stormed out of the room to leave in the car, angry about the argument that had just taken place. He didn’t drive very far, ending up in a local parking lot where he park the car and left it. Nevertheless, his girlfriend called the authorities. He was eventually arrested for taking the car, but this also lead to bigger problems. This is when drugs were found in the car that turned out to be his. You might say this was the start of him being outed for his drug addiction.
7. He is an author
Since he stopped fishing, he’s decided to pursue some other interests. One of those interests involves writing books. Today, he’s written two and has participated in writing sections for a couple of others.
8. He has chosen not to have a presence on social media
Since he’s trying to put things back together in his life, he decided that having a presence on social media was detrimental. Eventually, he decided to delete all of his social media accounts and he no longer participates in any of them.
9. He currently spends time away from the spotlight working through things
Much of his time these days is spent reflecting on everything that’s happened and figuring out how to cope with it on a day-to-day basis. He continues to work at it, both for himself and for those close to him.
10. He and his brother Josh still have a strong bond
Despite everything that’s happened between him and his brother after the death of their dad, the two still have a close bond and will always be brothers, even if life does take them in different directions.
