If you fondly remember the television series Bones, you might also remember Dr. Lance Sweets, played by John Francis Daley. In the show, Dr. Sweets was both an FBI agent and a psychologist. As such, there were some fairly interesting moments involving his character. Unfortunately, the character didn’t make it to the end of the show, one of the most heartbreaking revelations for fans. For anyone that loves his character, there was plenty of material to go through in the various episodes in which he starred. Below are five of the best involving Dr. Sweets.
1. Mayhem on a Cross
In this episode, viewers are reminded that even Dr. Sweets has his own demons that he’s forced to deal with. In almost every episode prior to this, you see him smiling and cracking jokes as a way to relieve some of the stresses that those around him are constantly under. Therefore, it never seems to occur to most people that his life isn’t quite as easy as he makes it seem. Here, you get to see a little bit more about his character. You find that when he’s had a rough day, he has a habit of listening to heavy metal music, something from his background that he’s never quite been able to shake. It just goes to show that even the calmest individuals can also have bad days. It also proves that even when a person puts a smile on their face and acts like everything is okay, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it really is. Perhaps people like Dr. Sweets are just better at hiding it than most.
2. The Critic in the Cabernet
This is another one that proves that even people that always seem like they have total control over their emotions might not have as much control as they like everyone to believe. Over time, Dr. Sweets has developed quite a relationship with both his coworkers. Here, you see Booth in the hospital and Dr. Sweets is incredibly upset about the entire situation. He’s upset about how the whole thing happened and that in his opinion, nothing is being done about it as quickly as it should be. He finds it difficult to stay in control of his emotions and for the first time since he appeared on the show, you start to see some cracks in the armor as he has trouble controlling his anger. Of course, this also shows the love that he has developed for the main characters in the show, something that makes him even more endearing to viewers.
3. The End in the Beginning
This is a rather interesting episode that goes a long way toward proving that Dr. Sweets cares a great deal about the people who are close to him. On one hand, you have him destroying evidence that he thinks will implicate someone he cares a great deal about and on the other hand, you have him trying to get away from it all by creating something of an alter ego. He’s always had an interest in music, and he eventually finds himself playing with a band in an attempt to get away from all of the stresses of his daily life. The episode in and of itself seems a little bit strange and doesn’t seem to be as clearly defined as many of the others, yet it is extremely important in defining this particular character. Without it, it would be much more difficult for fans to understand that even for those individuals that appear to have it all together, so to speak, there is always something bubbling just beneath the surface. In other words, they’re usually trying to find a way to deal with all of their uncertainty is just like everyone else.
4. The Prince in the Plastic
In this episode, you see Dr. Sweets start to sort things out on a personal level. He’s not really trying to indulge in his alter ego anymore. In fact, he’s made the decision that he wants to qualify with a firearm and has Booth conduct the test. At the end of the episode, you see that the two have grown even closer because Booth is telling him that he would trust him to have his own back if he ever needed to.
5. The Conspiracy in the Corpse
For fans who really love Dr. Sweets, this has to be one of the saddest episodes of the entire series. In the episode, he is attacked by an assailant and dies. He also provides some last words of encouragement to the people that he’s developed such an important relationship with over the years, telling them that when it’s all said and done, most people are really good. The worst part about the whole thing is that he passes away right before Paramedics arrive, effectively eliminating any hopes of saving his life.
