10 Life Lessons MTV’s “Awkward” Taught Us

MTV's Awkward Season 6

Some people might remember Awkward, which was a teen comedy that ran for a total of five seasons on MTV. In spite of the fact that it was a teen comedy, the series made better use of realism than most of its counterparts, which was something that provided it with a fair amount of praise. As a result, Awkward actually had a number of useful life lessons to teach, provided that interested individuals were willing to listen.

Here are 10 life lessons that can be earned from Awkward:

1. Parents Are People

It is not uncommon for kids to form the impression that their parents are invincible. After all, kids spent a lot of time with their parents when their parents were much bigger, much stronger, and much smarter than them, which is something that can leave a lasting impression. As a result, part of the process of becoming an adult is coming to terms with the fact that our parents are no more and no less than human, as shown by the numerous examples of parents in Awkward being less than perfect people.

2. Best Friends Can’t Be Replaced

There are times when best friends will have problems with one another, as shown in Season 1 when Jenna became more popular. However, best friends should do their best to maintain their relationships because best friends are the ones who will support us in our times of need.

3. Relationships Are Complicated

Romantic relationships tend to be pretty complicated even in the best of times, which is something made clear by not just Awkward but also at least half of the other teen series that can be found out there.

4. Openness Is Important in Relationships

Speaking of which, Awkward provides an excellent reminder that being open and honest increases the chances of a relationship’s success. For proof, look no further than how Jenna’s relationship with Jake broke down because she didn’t tell him about the fact that she had a secret relationship with Matty.

5. Forgiveness Isn’t the Same As Forgetfulness

People making mistakes is a natural part of life. However, even if we choose to forgive those who makes mistakes that hurt us, that doesn’t mean that we are obligated to forget their mistakes in the process as well because one is not the same as the other.

6. There Is a Limit to What People Should Do For the Sake of Fitting In

Awkward shows the moments when Jenna and others want to change themselves for the purpose of fitting in, but at the same time, it shows that how taking that too far can cause them serious harm. This is particularly true because people tend to be pretty good at noticing people who are pretending to be something that they are not.

7. Be True to Yourself

Instead, people should do their best to remain true to themselves instead of letting their personalities be dictated by those around them. Doing so can result in some friction with others, but at the end of the day, it tends to make for a happier and healthier person in the long run.

8. Gossiping Can Be a Pretty Bad Idea

Gossiping is something that most people will indulge in from time to time even if they might not call it as such. However, Awkward makes it clear that people should gossip with care because what they say behind other people’s backs can spread with frightening speed, as shown by the rumors over Jenna’s accident being a suicide attempt. Moreover, it is not impossible for such rumors to pop up at the worst times in a sort of karmic retribution.

9. Make More Friends

It is not exactly uncommon for people to have hobbies and interests that are not apparent based on their surface appearances. As a result, it is not exactly uncommon for people to get along pretty well even when they don’t seem like they would. One excellent example in Awkward is Jenna’s relationship with Matty, who starts out looking like a stereotypical jock but has more facets than that. Due to this, people might want to make friends with more people because they never knew when they might find someone that they get along with well.

10. Sometimes, Cruelty Is Just Cruelty

“No pain, no gain” is a pretty popular sentiment, not least because there is some truth to it. However, people need to remember that being touch is not the same as being cruel. For that matter, being cruel for the sake of kindness is still being cruel. This can be seen in Lacey’s brutal letter to her own daughter, which badly damaged not just her relationship with Jenna but also her relationship with her husband Kevin, so much so that the two were at serious risk of breaking up with one another over it.
