Why the Eternals Comic Book Series Could Make a Great Film Franchise

With the Avengers: Infinity War coming to the silver screen soon, many fans can’t help but feel as if the end of the MCU is coming to a close. Of course, we know that’s not the case because there are so many Marvel films currently in development. There’s Avengers 4, Captain Marvel, another Spiderman film, and then another Black Panther film in the future. There’s probably a lot more coming than that, but we still can’t help but ask, “What’s next?” According to the president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, they’re actually considering bringing in the Eternals to the big screen.

When Jack Kirby wrote the first comic book in July 1976, he probably never imagined that one day the story would make it onto film. The question is why the Eternals? What makes them good enough to stand alongside the greatness of the current MCU players? Comic book aficionados are certainly aware of who the Eternals are, but the average public probably don’t (versus more mainstream comic book heroes such as Spiderman or the Hulk). The story of the Eternals is so unique that Feige is sure it’s the right move for the studios altogether.

The Eternals is another race, an evolutionary branch of humanity that possesses great powers regular people don’t have. The Celestials, some of the oldest entities of the universe, were the ones who created the Eternals so many years ago. The Celestials came to Earth five million year ago and performed genetic experimentation on the prototypes of humans that led to divergent races: the Eternals and their monstrous counterparts, the Deviants. The Eternals appear much like human, live extremely long lives, and protect the normal human race from the Deviants.

There are tons of interesting Eternals characters that can easily be a source of another franchise for the MCU. However, it seems that when the project does move further into production, Marvel studios will be focusing on the story of one particular Eternal: Sersi. Sersi is supposed to be over 5,000 years old, and at that age, she’s considered to be one of the youngest Eternals. One of the most important parts of Sersi’s history is her involvement with Odysseus. In modern days, she connected with the Avengers through Captain America. She also has connections to Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Sersi’s powers include her super strength, telekinetic and telepathic abilities, incredible stamina, flight, illusions, teleportation, matter transmutation, and cosmic energy projection.

If MCU is going to start off the Eternals with Sersi, it already sounds like a good move, especially since she already has connections with so many other characters untouched by MCU at this point. Much like how the studio developed so many different story lines at the same time only to eventually converge into one film, we feel like post-phase 3 of MCU will follow that same pattern. We’d certainly like to see the Inhumans come into play and maybe some of Netflix’s current characters such as Cage and Jones. Feige claims that 90% of the studios’ focus is on current and upcoming projects. But the other 10% is going towards the development of new ideas. Knowing all of these, we are getting a better feeling that we might not see the end of the MCU come soon after all.
