The less than spectacular performance of Justice League has had a negative impact on the DC Extended Universe. In short, there are numerous movies under consideration, with examples ranging from some kind of Suicide Squad follow-up to a movie about the New Gods that is being headed up by Ava DuVernay. However, there are few movies that have been confirmed, as shown by the fact that no more than one new release is expected for 2018 and no more than a total of four new releases are expected for 2019 and 2020.
Under these circumstances, it is natural for people to wonder where there will ever be a follow-up to Man of Steel. This is particularly true because the idea of a follow-up to Man of Steel has been floated for some time, but there has been a serious lack of news in the time since. Granted, the chances of a follow-up to Man of Steel are close to being 100 percent because Superman is the single most recognizable character from DC Comics, which is in addition to the fact that Justice League saw his return to the Justice League setting. Still, the lack of news isn’t exactly encouraging, particularly since it doesn’t seem as though it will be changing anytime soon.
What Do We Know About Man of Steel 2?
So far, there is a lot of reports containing vague information about the follow-up to Man of Steel, but there aren’t a lot of facts that have been confirmed by the people behind it. For example, no one knows who has been chosen to direct the follow-up to Man of Steel, though a number of names have been brought up by interested individuals so far.
One excellent example is George Miller, who might be familiar to a lot of people out there as the director in charge of Mad Max: Fury Road. In 2015, there was a rumor that he had been chosen to direct the follow-up to Man of Steel, which was revealed to be false when he stated that his upcoming project at the time would be something smaller in scope. In contrast, more recent reports that Matthew Vaughn was a contender for the role were more credible because Vaughn outright confirmed that he had indeed engaged in talks with Warner Bros. However, since he has not been confirmed in the role, it seems clear that no one has been chosen so far.
Now, the focus is on Christopher McQuarrie, who worked with Henry Cavill on the new Mission Impossible movie. As a result, it is no wonder that he was asked whether he would be willing to work on the follow-up to Man of Steel, which convinced him to make a receptive response. Still, his receptiveness to the idea isn’t exactly a confirmation that he will indeed be taking on that role, meaning that nothing much has come from it at the moment.
A follow-up to Man of Steel is inevitable. Yes, Wonder Woman is the one DC Extended Universe movie that has been an unqualified success, but Warner Bros. isn’t going to toss out the commercial potential of Superman, not when the character has built up such a strong brand over time. However, until more information comes out, the public has no real way of knowing when interested individuals can expect that to happen.
