Kathy Griffin impersonating Kelly Conway on The President Show might leave a lot of people at a loss for words. This is after all the woman that thought it was okay to hold up a bloody head, thankfully not real, representing the current POTUS, and then had the audacity to wonder why people were lambasting her for it. It’s very true that freedom of speech does cover such an act and that comedy does get incredibly edgy at times, but when it comes to the POTUS such things are never taken lightly. Quite honestly it was done in poor taste and the backlash she did receive wasn’t too surprising. However when fellow comic Jim Carrey counseled her and encouraged her to see the comedy in what she’d done Griffin started to mount a comeback under the pretense of no longer caring what people thought. She’s going to do what she does in order to make her point felt and to inspire those that continued to back her even though it does look like a desperate bid to win people back.
There’s a lot that could be said about her decision to depict Trump’s fake severed head covered in blood, but it’s been said in so many ways at this point that letting it rest seems like a much better idea. Griffin has never really been the family-friendly type since her brand of comedy comes with an edge so sharp that some people might feel the sting if they decide to listen for too long. Her political views are her own just like anyone else’s, and had she done what she did for her own private purposes people might never have known about it. Had she released the picture in a book she might never have received death threats. But for a long time now she’s been the type to go for the gusto and just ride the storm that follows. This last time however could have been her undoing had she allowed it to be.
Whether you like her or not you can at least give her some credit for being able to get up and get back to what she was doing. Whining about how a bigger, stronger opponent came back and made her life a living nightmare doesn’t do her any favors, but actually getting back to the comedy she’s so well known for could. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like what she says, you don’t have to listen. If you don’t care for the way she presents herself then don’t watch. It’s your right to ignore her just as much as it’s her right to talk. In fact the only real thing that she’s done wrong in the recent past is that she didn’t gauge the landscape she was treading on before she went romping full steam ahead. If the Trump administration is her enemy, or at least her opposition, then it might have been a wise idea to figure out just how they would respond to her pictures.
She held up a bloody, decapitated head representing the POTUS. What did she think would happen?
