Kate Mara has said that she had an amazing time working with Kevin Spacey on the show House of Cards. The sexual assault charges that came not all that long ago were quite devastating for her to hear since she’d had nothing but positive experiences with Spacey during her 13-episode run. Mara, who’s starred in several movies and other TV shows, would have been one to sense a creepy vibe from Spacey considering that she had to get up close and personal with him for several scenes. But the actress simply states that she had a great time with Spacey and thought that he was very professional.
However despite not being forced to serve any jail time for the alleged assault that happened years before, Spacey has lost the career that he once had as Hollywood and pretty much everyone else is starting to treat men that have been accused as though they’re toxic in every way. In some regards this seems like justice since those that were undeniably guilty have been riding pretty high for a lot of years as everyone around them has believed that they’re good, honest people. But the revelation of what’s been done has unfortunately had some huge drawbacks. Spacey is no longer the darling that he once was to TV shows or movies, and even his role in All the Money in the World was re-shot using Christopher Plummer. At this point he really has no career and has spiraled down into something akin to a blackout when it comes to his chances of ever regaining the spotlight.
There are a number of men that have been affected by this and Spacey is just one, but the talent that has been taken from the screen at this point has no equal as of yet and is bound to create a type of vacuum that has yet to be fully realized. Those like Mara that have had good experiences with men like Spacey were caught unaware of just how serious this matter has become, but at this point it seems wise that they distance themselves from such individuals just for the sake of their own careers. Spacey isn’t the devil, but obviously he hasn’t always been a good man. However it seems to be that the more he and others deny their actions the guiltier they look, which doesn’t seem like it should be right. There’s no defense for what they did if there is solid evidence of what happened. But it’s easy to try and see both sides of this issue as on one side Spacey kind of deserves to have his reputation ruined if he really did what he’s being accused of. On the other hand the person that spoke up had all the time in the world to do so, but waited until someone else had the courage to speak up.
That perhaps is the biggest issue with the MeToo movement and others like it, that not a single person decided to speak up until so much later. Sadly, fame and money seems to be more important than dignity at times.
