Amazon is going for glory at the moment if they’re even thinking of spending $1 billion dollars to adapt the sci-fi trilogy, The Three-Body Problem at this time. They’re far from being the only contender for the story, but at this moment it seems like they might be the only buyer that might really consider purchasing the rights to it. This might seem like a risky move considering that they’ve already mentioned that they might be spending near half a billion trying to get the rights to Lord of the Rings for their own adaptation, but keeping up with other networks doesn’t seem to be a cheap proposition at this point. As of now it seems to be whoever is willing to spend the money is going to be the company that gets the rights. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be the best fit.
Adapting any story to any network should be something that is given a great deal of care and respect in regards to the story being told. The only problem there is that this is a very subjective practice and not at all prone to universal beliefs that what is thought to be good by one person will be accepted by all. While one service might knock it out of the park thanks to a big budget another might go just a little further and create something that is that much better. Networks have been going back and forth for years now trying to top one another when it comes to the shows they provide. Right now just about everyone is looking for their Game of Thrones moment since the HBO show has been one of the most popular series of all time and has raised the bar insanely high. While The Three-Body Problem might come highly recommended it’s still going to have an existing legacy to live up to that no one so far has managed.
Even those that don’t particularly like GoT can fully admit that it’s become one of the most watched shows ever made no matter what the numbers say. The fan base goes crazy every time the show is mentioned, and in terms of what it will take to generate the kind of attention that GoT has earned, it will take every bit of what Amazon has to replicate that kind of success. So far they’ve been doing just fine with the shows they’ve put out, but the epic level that GoT rests upon has eluded them as of yet. In order to get to that point and remain a contender with Netflix and Hulu, Amazon will need to step up its game and not just wow people by stating what it MIGHT do, but what it DOES. Their legacy as a provider of excellent entertainment is going to be tested soon enough, and when it does it might be nice if they could live up to the hype that’s been generated so far.
If they can do that then they’ll have earned the recognition they deserve.
