What we know about Doug Liman’s new TV series Impulse is that it’s going to be on YouTube Red and it’s going to be going off of the Jumper story that it’s already a part of, which is cool until you factor in the thought that the movie that was created from the stories didn’t do all that well in the theaters or the home movie department. The premise and plot of the movie were great but the execution was anything but. This time around however it seems that the main character is going to be built up a great deal before any of the teleporting ability is allowed to come in, meaning that it might not emerge until perhaps the second or third episode in any real detail, if it ever does.
So far what we can see of Impulse is that the main character, the daughter of a Jumper who inherited the power, is going to be the new girl in her town and school, and right away it looks very dark, dim, and depressing. She seems to be the kind of girl that likes to get into trouble and has problems fitting in, but finds it easy to be on her own and isolated from everyone else. If you ever watched the movie you would know that Jumpers were either highly exuberant and not at all shy about making themselves known, or were entirely secretive and didn’t liked to be noticed. This time around it seems as though shy, depressed, and completely alone is the order of the day as it seems that this young woman seems to find no solace anywhere in town apart from being alone. When she discovers she has powers however it’s bound to change the game immensely as it did for those in the movie. The only question will be is whether she’ll turn out like Griffin, who was absolutely psychotic, or David, who wanted the Paladins, those in charge of destroying Jumpers, to know that not all of them were the same.
So far the scene is being set for her to be somewhere uncomfortably between the two, as she isn’t the most upbeat character and might even have a substance abuse problem as it shows in the clip. But aside from her own issues is the fact that she does find out that she has the ability to teleport, which if anyone noticed comes in a similar fashion to the young David in the movie. While he slipped and fell through a sheet of ice retrieving a snow globe though she appears to jump off of a cliff into freezing cold water. So it’s similar but the newer version obviously has the edge as it has to push the limit a little more.
In any case it looks like it’s going to be a great series if only a little dark and gloomy through the first several episodes no doubt. How it builds up could determine just how she reacts to her ability when it finally comes out.
