With the arrival of the Avengers: Infinity War full-length trailer finally out we now see that the comics are starting to align just a little more with the movies, but the MCU is still reconditioning the story to conform to what has already come before. So far the trailer is making it look as though some of the Avengers’ fates might be in question. The only saving grace that some of these characters have is that they already have their own movies in the works so it will be impossible to kill them off entirely. Dr. Strange for instance looks like he’s in trouble at some point in the movie but what we’ve heard is that he already has another movie coming, so there’s no doubt going to be a way out for him. Ditto with Spider-man and several others, though there are some that could be greatly affected by the coming of the mad titan.
You can see how Captain America might stop Thanos initially, but if the comics hold true Thanos might be surprised by this, but not at all stopped since his power is far superior to that of Captain America. In the comics Thanos kills Captain America with a backhanded pimp slap after all. Iron Man is going to be taken to task since Thanos can be seen dropping him with a heavy-handed punch in the earlier trailers, and as for anyone else it’s still up in the air as to what will happen to them. Bucky might be the only one aside from Captain America who’s fate could possibly be sealed, as he’s not the biggest character in the MCU and might not be seen as indispensable any longer. The Guardians of the Galaxy are safe, particularly Gamorra since she has a long history with Thanos, as he’s her adoptive father and might not wish to fight her. It could be that he’ll even try to recruit her during the movie.
But make no mistake, Thanos is coming and stuff is going to get messed up in a very crazy and chaotic way. Thanos is not the kind of bad guy that the Avengers are used to dealing with. In fact he makes a lot of them put together look like a cake walk, at least in the comics. The Avengers are Earth’s mightiest heroes, but Thanos definitely transcends Earth without question, and his followers are possessed of the kind of power that could make the Avengers’ task just that much harder as well. As of right now it’s a shame that the MCU hasn’t seen fit to introduce characters like Adam Warlock and a few others that have dealt with Thanos in the past. It might not swing things in the favor of the Avengers but it would introduce another dynamic that would at least tip the scales one way or another.
Thanos is not the typical bad guy really, but he’s one of the worst that anyone in the MCU will have ever encountered.
