Craig Mack might have been someone unique to the rap game if he hadn’t been overshadowed by other rappers that took the fame and left him wandering around trying to get noticed. He did put out a couple of albums and he did have a fan base but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep him in the game. Unfortunately Mack had taken ill for a while before his recent passing, and was expecting a grim outcome. He passed from heart failure on March 12th in a hospital near his home in South Carolina.
So far 2018 isn’t being any kinder than the previous few years when it comes to celebrities.
5. His first single came out in 1988.
He was going by MC EZ back then and would have been something great had the Notorious B.I.G. and a few others not hit their stride so soon. He had a fresh sound and was primed to be someone that could come out and produce the kind of music that people wanted to hear. But the unfortunate part was that he kind of got beat to the punch when it came to the popularity of his music.
4. Puff Daddy claimed to be working with Mack on his second album.
This seemed liked it surprised Mack and everyone else because Puff Daddy didn’t help him at all on his second album. It could be that Puffy meant to but never got around to it, or it could mean a lot of other things that could have explained why Puffy would make such a claim. In any case Mack made the second album himself and after a while just kind of slipped off the map.
3. He kind of disappeared from the hip hop industry for a while.
There are a lot of reasons why someone would just lay low for a while, actors and musicians do it quite often when the limelight gets a little too intense. Mack seems to have done it for more personal reasons than anything though. He was no doubt feeling the pinch when it came to the competition and knew that he’d have to continue trying to outdo his fellow musicians in order to get noticed.
2. He joined a Christian ministry.
He moved his entire family to South Carolina and joined the Overcomer Ministry. A YouTube channel operated by the ministry is really the only reason he got noticed again as it broadcast Mack rapping a version of When God Comes. The video was titled the Craig Mack Testimony and it had a lot to do with him speaking out about Mack’s personal beliefs about the rap industry and other various things.
1. Mack felt that he was doing something more worthwhile in South Carolina.
It would seem that moving to South Carolina allowed Mack a chance to reflect on what he’d been doing in New York. He called it ‘wickedness’ while in South Carolina he was doing ‘righteousness’. Obviously he’d had a huge change of heart about the music he was producing.
Rest in peace sir.
