If gun control laws made sense on a fictional show like The West Wing then why in the world don’t they make sense in our government? I could be childish at this point and pick apart the reasons why a lot of society believes that gun control doesn’t work and why the 2nd Amendment should be brought into play more often but I’ll admit that I’m a bit weary of all the arguments and would rather point out the fact that the 2nd Amendment does say “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Does anyone even care that the second part of this sentence seems to be where a lot of people draw the line and want to begin the argument? A WELL-REGULATED MILITIA, being necessary to the security of a FREE STATE. Those are the first major parts of this amendment and yet people seem to look at the right to keep and bear arms and don’t think about the rest of it. No one’s arguing that they want to keep their guns, but there are those in society that shouldn’t have them to start with. The ‘well-regulated’ part is where our country seems to be dropping the ball on its own toes and then crying because the lack of being well-regulated is causing so much hurt. And the idea of guns being necessary to the security of a free state? Who in the world is attacking us? The damage is being done from the inside, not from a foreign invader. Our own people are taking up arms against their fellow Americans and a lot of folks don’t seem to be able to look inward and realize that fact.
By looking everywhere but to our own borders we’re missing the fact that those with serious mental problems are being given the one thing that they should never be allowed to touch. Facebook posts that are being flashed proudly by those that eventually go off and shoot up a school are being passed off for evaluation when the originator should be taken in and questioned at the very least. The idea of Big Brother watching us is horrifying, and yet not having any regulations is even worse since you won’t know how messed up someone is in the head until that first shot goes off. A TV show figured out that out of so many other countries that, when put together would equal the size of the US, have only a fraction of the gun deaths that we do. And why? Because they have some form of gun control.
As much as people want to claim that it’s not the guns that are the problem, it’s also not the desire of any person to up and get rid of all guns. Even those that would disagree and say that we should abolish guns would likely want someone with a gun to protect them if they were about to be shot down in the street. But instead of getting rid of them, let’s at least try and regulate how they’re sold and who they’re sold to.
