James L. Brooks is a man with a very sharp and acerbic sense of humor. This has helped him throughout his career thus far as he’s been a writer and a director for years now and has done exceedingly well at his job. He’s been one of the most successful men in television and has proven it through his many awards and through the shows he’s helped to make famous. He’d tell you that being the director and writer is a very lonely job despite the fact that there’s people all around you at all times. They’re there trying to do what they can to make what’s in the writer’s head come to fruition however, and until they realize what it is the writer still feels very alone.
He’s done a great job relaying his ideas though.
5. He likes to write about OCD individuals.
There’s something about writing about people the suffer from Obsessive Compulsion Disorder that seems to appeal to Brooks. I don’t get the feeling that he likes to see people suffer but the disorder is something that requires a lot of thought and a lot of attention to bring to the screen. In turn it offers a lot of different plot twists that can be derived from a single individual that has OCD.
4. He likes using Jack Nicholson and Albert Brooks for his stories.
A lot of writers have their favorite actors that they like to work with and develop a bond of sorts with them that allows them to continually picture those same people in the roles they’re writing about. This in turn gives them the kind of inspiration they need to create a character for a story that could possibly be more well-developed and fleshed out so that they can fulfill their part that much better.
3. He owns Gracie films.
Gracie films is responsible for The Simpsons. The mere fact that he owns it is something great because without this there’s a chance that one of the greatest episodic shows in the world wouldn’t have found a home and might not have become the phenomenon it is today. It’s important to remember these kinds of things when you think of how your favorite shows got to be where they are now.
2. He’s won 19 Prime Time Emmy awards.
He’s won these award as a writer and a director and has more than anyone else in history. This proves that he’s been doing something right all along since you don’t just win awards based on popularity, at least not all the time. His style and his storytelling is something unique and wonderful that people have seen for so long and have agreed is worth recognizing in a big way.
1. He’s had a cameo in the Mary Tyler Moore Show.
During a few of the seasons the show was running he’s shown as a jogger that goes by as Mary makes her way along a lakefront shot. He can also be heard laughing in the background during Taxi.
You can’t deny he’s had one heck of a career.
