Girlpool is not your average band and as much as we’ve seen bands come and go that didn’t conform to the norms of mainstream music it’s always interesting to find a musical act that still continues this tradition. They’ve managed to gain a fan base even if their fame isn’t as widespread as many other bands are. That doesn’t seem to matter at this point since they’re having a good time making their music and doing what they want to do. Fame and fortune are in fact the desires of many individuals, but when the music and the process of creating it come first it’s a nice switch.
They’ve made a name for themselves through their music, that’s a great start.
5. They started out in 2013.
Their passion for music started before this but about five years ago was when they really came on the scene. Their first album didn’t come out until 2014 despite their entrance into the music industry. They signed with Wichita Recordings and since then have been doing what they can to enjoy their music and to get it out so that people can hear it and make up their own minds about them.
4. They have a very angry, socially-conscious sound.
Perhaps angry is the wrong word but it feels like they’re attempting to let go of some very powerful feelings in their songs and as a result it comes off as slightly aggressive but very self-aware. This kind of music is not always looked upon favorably but it does send a very interesting message about the younger generation and what they are going through, as well as how they interpret their place in society.
3. They only added a drummer to their group after their initial start.
They started out without a drummer initially and didn’t seem to worry about. But later they added a drummer, perhaps thinking that it would add to their sound and give their songs a little more depth as well as a support that is usually needed in some songs. Whether a drummer is needed usually depends on the song and what kind of support it really needs, but the percussion is a very positive thing for many pieces of music since it adds to the force of the song.
2. The two of them have been making music since high school.
This wasn’t something they started on a lark or just because they had the talent and wanted to do something with it. They’ve been working on their music since high school and as of their initial release we finally get to hear it and try to understand what it is they’re saying in their lyrics and imagery. It’s not entirely hidden away as they seem to want to express themselves so that people can take note.
1. They started out in LA.
A lot of acts start out in Los Angeles it seems, as this is the birthing ground for a lot of entertainment. They did however decide to move to Philadelphia at one point, where they are still working on new music.
Maybe one day we’ll see them blow up and become something known throughout nation. It could happen.
