Robert Mockler is what you might call an up and coming success in the entertainment industry. He’s recently put his own film, Like Me, through the rigors of the SXSW (South by Southwest) Film Festival and it was a hit with many individuals. He’s a newcomer basically and thankfully is on the right track already as he’s getting rave reviews and has done a few different interviews as well. Now that his film is ready to be unleashed on the rest of the population we’ll just have to wait and see how people will react.
Hopefully others will find his work just as endearing.
5. He’s been interested in films since he was young.
A lot of individuals could possibly make this claim since film is such a magical thing when a person is young. But it does tend to take a very inquisitive and imaginative mind to stick with this kind of interest. As we grow up the compromises we make in our lives can cause this fascination to fade and possibly wither. But obviously Mockler’s love of cinema was strong enough.
4. He cites Requiem for a Dream as one of his inspirations.
This was an interesting film that played around with a lot of different themes, camera angles, and other technical aspects that confused some people and thrilled others. Looking at Like Me it’s pretty obvious that he’s not kidding around when he cites such a film as his inspiration. In many ways he’s taken after this film on a slightly different level.
3. He wrote, produced, and directed Like Me.
That’s a lot of work to do for a film, as he’s pulling three jobs where a lot of people on films will only be in charge of one or two at the most. Seeing as how he’s still starting out though it could be that his budget is still fairly low, or it could be that he wants to be more involved with the script and everything else. That would make a lot of sense to be honest.
2. The film is pretty dark in many places.
Even Mockler feels that his film is understandably dark in some spots, almost enough that people might cringe and get up to walk out. Hopefully that won’t happen, but after watching the trailer I can honestly say that I don’t think it’s my type of film. I watched Requiem for a Dream all the way through but wasn’t fully enraptured with it as others were. This film seems like it could be something of the same, but again, people will have to wait and see.
1. He’s very cerebral in his approach to filming.
That’s a very good thing to be honest but it can be a director’s downfall as well. On the one hand it means that he’s critical enough to catch any big mistakes and possible little ones that might otherwise detract from the film. However it could also mean that he will constantly try to tweak his film until it finally breaks just because he didn’t leave something alone that didn’t need to be altered. But that’s the worst case scenario really.
Best of luck you Robert.
