Margot Robbie is kind of regretting her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad largely because she didn’t know the kind of terrain she was going to be stepping into. I’m with Moviefone when it comes to feeling sorry for celebrities. It’s kind of hard because a lot of them get paid big bucks for playing pretend and doing the best job at it. But then again being in the public eye all the time and having to deal with the nutjobs that can’t differentiate reality from fantasy isn’t something that a lot of us would want to deal. Anyone can say that this is the landscape and that a celebrity should be able to afford a pretty good view of what’s to come, but then again it sounds more like a war zone in a jungle where you can’t always see the psychos that might be lurking behind the nearest bush.
Since starring as Harley Quinn she’s had stalkers and death threats aplenty that have plagued her every waking day and facilitated the need for increased personal security. It sounds like Robbie has even had to do background checks on various stalkers to see if they have a history of violence, which costs an arm and a leg since she seems to have so many of them. But worse than that is the fact that to pay for all of this she needs to keep making high profile movies so that she can afford it. At this point I’m not sure whether to feel sorry for Robbie or disgusted with those that would take things to such great lengths, or both.
Honestly I don’t feel as sorry for her as I should, largely because this is the career she wished to pursue and she could have done more research into her character to find out just what she might have to expect from those that would eventually watch the movie. Also, I don’t find a lot of pity in my heart since she’ll be reprising her role in a sequel to Suicide Squad. If the first one got her death threats and stalkers why in the world would she do another one? I get that she needs to make money to afford her security and everything else, but why not lay low and let everything die down for a while by living simpler and allowing herself to finally drop off of peoples’ radar? Oh, that’s right, because she’s an A-list actor and needs the spotlight to stay relevant.
If that sounds a bit critical then you guessed right because as popular as she is, and Margot Robbie is in fact VERY popular, she’s still an intelligent woman and can figure out just what needs to be done in this current situation. She doesn’t deserve the death threats or the danger of being stalked, but she also needs to research her parts a little more so that she understands the possible reaction of the fans.
If you play a crazy woman onscreen, especially a crazy woman that so many fans know about, there’s a good chance that you might get a little blowback as well as feedback.
