Five Shows You’ll Like if You Like “Fixer Upper”

Texas couple Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper”, have been turning dilapidated old homes into beautiful dwellings since 2013. Their hugely popular home improvement show has helped to bring old neighborhoods in central Texas back to life. Whether they are turning a 1927 brick Tudor mansion into a family-friendly home with a modern edge, or converting a historic ranch house to a Mediterranean-inspired retreat, Chip and Joanna help to unlock the full potential of any abode.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Joanna Gaines posted on her blog back in September, announcing that Season 5 will be the creative couple’s last season of “Fixer Upper”. Though we still have several episodes until the end of the season — not to mention the highly-anticipated “Behind the Design”, a spin-off starring Jo Gaines — we will need to fill a sizable hole in our viewing schedules. Luckily, there are a few more shows that can help us get our home improvement fix. Without further delay, here are five shows you should check out if you like “Fixer Upper”.

Flip or Flop

Another home renovating show from HGTV, “Flip or Flop”, follows Tarek and Christina El Moussa as they purchase foreclosed homes and try to turn them for a profit. The intense auction scenes and impressive renovations are sure to keep you interested in this show. You may have heard that Tarek and Christina are getting a divorce, but that isn’t stopping this home renovation empire. They have confirmed that the show is returning for an eighth season. So, we can look forward to asking the quintessential question — will it flip or flop?

Property Brothers

This show follows twin brothers Drew and Johnathan Scott as they scout out and renovate old homes for their clients. Oftentimes, they are working against a strict budget and deadline, lending some excitement to the renovation process. “Property Brothers” does it all: emotional moments, grand reveals, and innovative use of technology — Johnathan uses CGI to show his clients how their dream home could look after the brothers do what they do best. The show from HGTV is currently in its eleventh season, with a high possibility of a twelfth. It will likely keep you entertained for years to come!

Rehab Addict

“Rehab Addict” centers around home renovator Nicole Curtis. She has a passion for restoring old homes, particularly those with historic value. Much of the show takes place in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Detroit, Michigan. Ms. Curtis uses a hands-on approach in this show, hoping to restore these homes to their former glory while trying to preserve as much as possible. If you have an interest in historical buildings and DIY home renovation, this is a great show to add to your list. The show recently began its eighth season, however a ninth has not yet been confirmed. Hopefully, this educational, no-nonsense series will continue to be aired for as long as possible!

Love It or List It

In this show featuring real estate agent David Visentin and interior designer Hilary Farr, the clients are homeowners who are tired of their current home. The two stars compete, each suggesting a path of action. Hilary will try to transform their current living space, while David tries to find them a new home altogether. It’s up to the client whether they love it — by renovating it — or list it, and move. Though the show went dead for a while, ending with season 10 back in 2015, it was recently confirmed that it will be coming back on the air in July. HGTV purchased a 20-episode contract with the Visentin and Farr in September of this year. We’ll look forward to seeing two of our favorite home renovators return to the air soon!

Design on a Dime

Renovating a house on a budget takes some serious talent. Luckily, interior designer Casey Noble can deliver a beautiful interior renovation without breaking the bank. This show doesn’t feature a full home renovation like the other shows, but it can be inspiring for the average viewer.

If you take Ms. Noble’s tips, you too could renovate some rooms without spending too much cash. This show will be very interesting to any DIYer or renovation enthusiast. The show’s next season isn’t confirmed, and it has been on a hiatus (no official cancellation) for quite some time. However, there are 31 seasons already shot — exceeding the amount of any other show on this list!
