The nominees for the 24th Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced. Once again, there are snubs and surprises that we could all rave or rant. You can view the full list of the nominees here. The live telecast will be on Sunday, January 21 at 8:00pm ET on TNT and TBS and it will be hosted by Kristen Bell.
In the movie categories, The Post was notably snubbed in the Cast Ensemble category. I was predicting it as the frontrunner in the category since it has all the film and television stars that are also well-respected in the industry. How come the film was complete shut out? I think it’s because voting has already started at the time when the film was screened for the voters and sent the DVDs. The votes probably didn’t reach enough to guarantee a nomination despite its late screening. If it was earlier, I bet they would nominate it all the way especially Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. Still, the film shouldn’t worry about its Oscar chances. Remember, Christoph Waltz won an Oscar for Django Unchained without a SAG nomination. He didn’t got nominated for the same reason. Fingers crossed for the entire The Post team.
For the same reason, Daniel Day-Lewis was snubbed for his final performance in Phantom Thread. The film also had a late screening to the voters which could also be the reason why it was snubbed. On the bright side, James Franco was nominated for The Disaster Artist. Also, notably, Denzel Washington got nominated for a film that didn’t receive well. Also, I noticed that Hong Chau (Downsizing) suddenly became a major player for the Supporting Actress category. Her chances of getting nominated is better than ever given this nomination. But, Laurie Metcalf (Lasy Bird) should be the eventual winner in the category. Steve Carell earned a nomination for Battle of the Sexes which is a second win for Bobby Riggs as well. The guild also shows their love for Woody Harrelson by nominating him along with co-star Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
It’s great that The Big Sick got nominated in the cast ensemble category. I love the film so much and it’s well deserved. They really love the film as they also nominated the wonderful Holly Hunter. The same with Get Out and Mudbound. Call Me by Your Name didn’t receive much love since Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg were notably snubbed.
In the television categories, my favorite line-up has to be the Female Actor in the Television Movie or Limited Series category since it’s going to be a battle between the three Big Little Lies ladies and the two Feud: Bette and Joan ladies. So, who will win with all the vote splitting? Maybe Jessica Lange. I don’t see anyone from Big Little Lies winning since it’s three of them who are vote-splitting and I don’t think Nicole Kidman will get the majority consensus to win. In the male side, their co-star Alexander Skarsgard was nominated along with Robert De Niro, Geoffrey Rush, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jeff Daniels. It’s a great company to be with but De Niro might win this one.
In the drama line-up, Millie Bobby Brown, Robin Wright, and Claire Foy are back in the female side. But, the winner here is most likely Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s also nice to see Laura Linney nominated for Ozark as well as her co-star Jason Bateman in the male side. David Harbour received a nomination which is well-deserved since Hopper became one of the main points of the second season of Stranger Things. Also, since Wright was nominated and Kevin Spacey was obviously snubbed, it sounds like a “middle finger” to Spacey and I love it. The ensemble nominees are similar as the Drama Series nominees at the Emmys.
In the comedy line-up, the guild obviously shows their love for GLOW. I haven’t seen the show so I can’t comment about how deserving it is but it’s surprising to see Alison Brie and Marc Maron getting in. Also, apparently, they love Curb Your Enthusiasm as they nominated it on ensemble and for Larry David. Will and Grace was snubbed in the ensemble category but, at least, Sean Hayes got in. Hayes was a favorite during the original run. Also, I don’t think Uzo Aduba should get nominated this year given her character’s circumstance in the latest season. It should have gone to Danielle Brooks. It’s also strange to see Modern Family getting snubbed for the first time.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards is considered as one of the important pre-cursors of the Oscars. But, given the snubs of The Post and Phantom Thread, the pattern of correlation between the SAG Awards and the Oscars might break this year.
