The holidays are upon us! There’s Christmas cheer all around as Jack Frost nips at our noses. Though in this week’s episode of Madam Secretary, there’s no time to be merry and bright.
I am on the secretary’s side when she said that the holiday party is a charade to execute a political agenda and to feed rich people. That, and she, like myself, is not much of a party person. On the other hand, this party served its purpose. Elizabeth got the necessary votes for the Calgary Treaty on Land Mines. On top of that, Henry and his team at the CIA unearth the proof they need to arrest Senate Majority Leader Beau Carpenter for conspiring with the Russians. It’s a win-win for everybody. I still wonder how the secretary got a vote from Carlos Morejon. Maybe the hard-as-nails senator has a soul after all.
Major kudos to Stevie for making the party a success. The eldest McCord child has excellent taste. I also applaud her for standing up to her mother when the latter is still being edgy about the party. I had a good chuckle when Elizabeth told her daughter to pretty much go down the cheap route for the party. Just because she and Henry are civil servants, doesn’t mean that they can’t throw a kick-butt holiday party.
Circling back to the landmines, I can’t believe that Elizabeth brought the explosive into the office. Yes, it’s not an active one, but still. Then again, when the Secretary of State’s passionate about something, she will stop at nothing to get it done. Stevie is right, her mother will make a good president someday, even if said mother doesn’t want to be one. The secretary turned the offer down once before, and I have a feeling that she will keep turning it down for the foreseeable future.
I also can’t believe that Henry also decided to use the holiday party to infiltrate Carpenter’s house to look for evidence. It seems like everyone is using the event for their gain even though said gains are for the greater good. At least he won’t have to deal with people criticising his choice of reading material should they come across his bookshelves.
The interaction between Stevie and Dmitri at the end is intriguing. It seems that the newly formed couple want to keep things on the down low for a while. Can’t say I disagree but I hope that they will be more careful should Henry ever find out about them.
Final Thoughts:
Applause for Jay, Daisy, and Blake for their beautiful renditions of classic Christmas carols.
I feel sympathetic towards Meghan, the event coordinator. On the other hand, the “simple” party elements that she was suggesting is not exactly on the simple side of things. Her idea is more for an elaborate gathering at a hotel ballroom or mansion rather than at the secretary’s townhouse.
The sympathy extends to Stevie as well for being thrown under the metaphorical bus by Russell Jackson to plan the holiday party.
Point of Confusion: since when did Minister Chen hear about the holiday party? Does he use social media?
Christmas Miracle: Elizabeth and Senator Morejon working together to stall for time with Beau Carpenter as the Senate Majority Leader prepares to leave.
It’s also nice to see Mike B. back at the State Department. I’m curious to know if he knows about Nadine’s departure? I look forward to seeing more of him and how he deals with Nadine 2.0. That, and how Elizabeth will deal with the Russians about their hacking into a secret US military database.
