Films that are shot in Portland or even just in the Pacific Northwest are usually loved by a good number of the people that live here since so many people have so many diverse tastes in movies. It could be all the way down in California and it would be a favorite in Portland, but those that are closer to home are usually given a lot more attention. Even mention of the film being set in Oregon is sometimes enough even if it was filmed in another state. A lot of people that have been around for more than a few years can tell the difference between Oregon and anywhere else, but the mention in a major motion picture is always nice. The one thing that Portlanders like to see and hear when they go to the movies, just like anyone, is that their corner of the world is given some attention when it comes to the spotlight that graces so many other cities.
Not every one of the films on this list took place in Portland or even near it, but the mention is fully appreciated.
5. The Hunted
The last place you need a trained killer to be running loose is on the streets of Portland and throughout its many wilder areas. Once he’s in the woods he’s essentially gone, and finding him will take someone that knows how to look and what to look for in case he’s covered his trail. Still, unless you’re coming with a minigun or something equally as damaging the chances are you’re dead the moment you follow him.
4. The Goonies
This film was shot a couple hours up the road on the coast, at least for a lot of film, but ask any Portland resident and anyone along the road to and from the coast and you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone that doesn’t know about the Goonies. The film is still loved by people young and old and there’s rumors abounding that there might be a sequel coming eventually.
3. The Postman
This was filmed in central Oregon but it’s still within the state so people tend to know about it. The story I thought was a lot better than critics gave it credit for. A single person inspiring so many is something our country seems to need at this time and so far not a single person has managed to unite everyone into thinking that it’s time to stop fighting and rebuild.
2. Overboard
Despite the references to the ‘wilds of Oregon’ this film was shot in Mendecino, California. It certainly has the feel and look of the Northwest in many ways, but it’s definitely Californian. The movie is still great however since it’s a good look at life from a different angle that allows Goldie Hawn to realize that her own existence isn’t all there is and isn’t all that enjoyable.
1. Untraceable
Filmed right in Portland, this movie was downright creepy since regardless of how unreal it is the idea that someone could kill people online is something that seems like it could actually happen in this day and age. If a person showed this kind of aptitude and desire to kill then all they would need would be the materials and the know-how.
Portland residents love movies, it’s one of the many things they do whether it’s raining or not.
