10 Things You Didn’t Know about “Slumdog Millionaire”

This movie is actually way more depressing than it’s made out to be honestly. It’s as though the trailers were designed to be a lot more upbeat and give people the impression that the idea of a young man being the underdog winner was something far more positive than the film actually portrays. Jamal does in fact earn a life of riches and gets the girl eventually but the struggle and the trouble he has to go through in order to get there is absolutely insane. A lot of people would think that a life spent like this would break anyone after a while, but somehow Jamal makes it work and eventually reaps the benefits of holding out some type of hope that life will get better. The journey there is definitely a lot rougher than most people realize though.

As usual there are a few things that lot of people might not have known.

10. The kids in the film are very well taken care of.

The director of the film made sure that they would receive trust funds when they hit the age of sixteen, and they were to be given transport via rickshaw until that age as well.

9. Despite being seen as racist the term Slumdog wasn’t even remotely offensive.

It was based upon the fact that he lived in the slums and is the underdog of the movie.

8. The pile of excrement that Jamal jumps into is a mix of peanut butter and chocolate.

It’s disturbing really what you can make with what is otherwise an appealing snack.

7. The film was originally supposed to have a PG-13 rating.

Due to the intense nature of the film in certain spots it was instead given an R rating and it was released before anything could be changed.

6. It was almost released straight to DVD.

The popularity of the script and the film in general usually decides this but thankfully it was allowed to run in the theaters.

5. About twenty percent of the film’s dialogue is Hindi.

To accommodate all viewers it’s obvious that the film makers wanted to add in some traditional dialogue with subtitles while still allowing people to understand a good part of the movie.

4. The soundtrack only took twenty days to compose.

That’s actually nothing short of amazing since the soundtrack to a film can sometimes take quite a while from start to finish.

3. Mercedes-Benz actually wanted its logo removed from the film.

They didn’t want their logo to be seen in the poorer parts of the city, as they believed it would tarnish their image. Shallow end of the pool, anyone?

2. The song Jai Ho was originally made for another movie.

It wasn’t intended for this movie but since it was deemed as not right for the film it was supposed to go to it landed back in this soundtrack.

1. Jamal’s first and only kiss comes at the end of the last scene.

I wonder if he was a little hyped up for this scene? After all what young boy wouldn’t get just a little nervous kissing a pretty girl in a movie?
