Seems like a lot of sitcoms are feeling the influence of Game of Thrones. Even the Simpsons have gotten into and in this clip they’ve found a way to make it even more hilarious. Instead of prank phone calls, as Bart loves to do on the regular show, they send ravens to deliver prank messages for Moe to read to the bar. This is pretty funny, especially since there’s definitely a way to tell who sent the note, but no way of telling who it really was. Prank calls are a little different thanks to Caller ID. Plus if a number comes up as Restricted then there’s nothing to stop a person from not picking up. A raven on the other hand could be carrying important news or it could be carrying a cleverly disguised gag.
The look of the tavern is even great in this episode as you take in the the wooden planks that make up the bar, the barrels stacked against the back wall, and the truly downtrodden look of the men sitting at the bar. Even their tankards are cool to look at. Notice how Barney’s is all dented and cracked though, almost as if Moe is trying to get him to push off and go somewhere else. Not that this has ever worked mind you, it’s just something to notice.
I wonder if Moe has plenty of ink and quills on hand for an episode like this, because Bart obviously has no problem sending one note after another sailing into the bar. Plus his returning insults are something you might find silly even on GoT. Bile, black bile, and phlegm! In other words Moe is attempting to tell Bart just what he thinks of him and possibly threaten him in a very silly and nonsensical manner. Of course that’s Moe, he’s a lot of bark and no bite. Remember the episode in which Bart set Moe on Jimbo? It was done out of spite to oust Jimbo as a coward when Bart found that the young woman of his dreams, who was unfortunately his babysitter, and his neighborhood bully were making out while she was supposed to be watching the Simpson kids.
Moe stormed over to the Simpsons’ house fully intent and ready to scare the living daylights out of someone, only to be flummoxed when Jimbo broke down crying after being frightened out of his mind by the weapon-wielding bartender. Admittedly Moe even said that he wouldn’t have really hurt Jimbo, but the damage to the bully’s reputation was done and Bart’s sitter asked him to leave.
I wonder how far he’d go in a GoT episode? Do you think he’d come storming over with a battleaxe or a heavy sword and threaten to make Bart into a eunuch? That sounds horrible and edgy even for the Simpsons but because of that fact it might be something they’d be willing to do. After all the Simpsons was one of the shows that pioneered that kind of edge in animation.
It’d be pretty funny to watch.
