James Cameron Not Backing Away From Wonder Woman Criticism

Wonder Woman

James Cameron is one of the most acclaimed directors in the modern movie industry but this does not mean he does not face criticism. This is certainly the case for the comments he recently made about ‘Wonder Woman’. However, he has faced up to his critics and told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview that although he has caused controversy, he doesn’t regret it. He referred to the superhero as an ‘objectified icon’ and also commented that his heroines, Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor, had set feminist principles that Wonder Woman does not adhere to in any way.

His comments caused a backlash online with fans of the superhero taking to social media to slam Cameron’s opinions. Some fans felt that he was unqualified to make such comments as he is not a woman. While most fans agreed that he is a very talented filmmaker, they felt that his opinions regarding feminism suggested that the world has not progressed if people cannot accept a woman that is both loving and attractive.

Cameron defended his comments during the interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He used Gal Gadot who won the title of Miss Israel as an example in his explanation. Cameron described her as being a dropped-dead gorgeous woman but that wearing a fitted bustier was no a ground-breaking action. He compared this to Raquel Welch wearing a similar outfit in the 1960s.

Referring to Sarah Connor’s performance in ‘Terminator’, a film James Cameron directed, he suggested that Connor’s performance fared favorably in comparison to that of Wonder Woman. He described Connor as delivering a performance that demonstrated angst and will while completely lacking any element of sexuality. He said that by the end of the film, the audience loved this character. As a result, this role was groundbreaking whereas Wonder Woman was not.

He went on to say that he had actually enjoyed the film and thought it was good. He also applauded Patty Jenkins who directed the movie. In fact, he said that this was the one groundbreaking element of the movie; the fact that it is a superhero movie that is directed by a woman. Cameron simply didn’t think it was moving things forward in the movie industry. He supported this argument by saying that while Hollywood had cracked the drama side of things, they spent too much time concentrating on targeting one demographic rather than trying to give the movies a wider appeal.

Regardless of whether people agree or disagree with Cameron’s comments, he has made it quite clear that he has no intention of retracting what he has said. Despite the director’s opinions, this film was a big hit with superhero fans. For this reason, a sequel is already in the pipeline. Initial reports suggest that this movie will be released on December 13, 2019, and this is great news for those who disagreed with James Cameron.
