The Television Food Network is gearing up for some creepy cooking this Halloween season. If you enjoy getting into the spirit of the season then you’re in for a real treat, no pun intended. “Halloween Baking Championship” premieres on September 26, 2017 and the contestants will be dishing out their best while trying to create the scariest dishes possible. Here are five things you didn’t know about the show.
The application process is very lengthy
There are certain requirements that each contestant must meet to qualify for the selection process. Since the show features top bakers from around the country, this is only fair. After hopefuls fill out the online application, they wait to find out if they have made it through the initial screening process. Those who make the initial cut are contacted, sometimes as soon as the next day with requests for pictures of some of their Halloween baked goods so get an idea of what they can do. From this point, those chosen must engage in telephone and Skype interviews with the Food Network executives to find out if they are the right material for the show. Next, is a background check. Those who pass all of these trials are invited to be contestants on the show.
Bakers are clueless when they arrive
Contestants who participate in the competition for “Halloween Baking Championship” are not told which themes they will be recreating until they are in front of the judges, just prior to the start of the baking frenzy. Sometimes the designs required can throw the bakers for a loop because they then need to think on their feet and come up with a plan that follows the specifications given by the judges. The creations not only must be the best looking, but taste is also a factor. The bakers who are the best at experimentation and creativity have the better chance of winning the overall contest.
The contestants always have a story
This is one of the most interesting parts of the show. Sure, we get to see some cool Halloween creations, but the Food Network always remembers to include the human aspect. Bakers share a little bit about themselves and why they are in the contest. Some hope to build their business if they win the cash prize, and others want to help friends, family or worthy causes with portions of the winnings. Some of the stories are quite moving and it makes viewers feel more connected to the bakers.
Judge Ron Ben Israel dressed like a jellyfish
When asked about his favorite Halloween costume, Ron’s answer took the cake. One Halloween, he decided to dress up as a jelly fish. He achieved the look by putting a lampshade on top of his head. He then tied translucent garbage bags around his body for a spectacular effect. Now we know why he can be so hard on the contestants. He’s the master of creativity.
Richard Blais is really a prankster
The host of “Halloween Baking Championship” may come across as straight laced and serious on the show, but he has a funny side. On Halloween, he put on a werewolf mask and then knocked on the door of his family home. When the children opened the door, he frightened them so badly that it brought them to tears. In addition to this, he made sure that the entire event was videotaped.
