If you want to know something about anything you should be going to a person that’s lived the experience in some crucial way. That’s why Mark Hamill is the guy you should go to when it comes to anything and everything Star Wars. The guy was in the original trilogy, all three movies, and was one of the more pivotal characters of the story. In fact you could say that he and Leia were about the only two characters that were not ultimately expendable. You could say that of Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Ben Kenobi as well, but they were supporting characters for Luke and Lei to be quite honest, and they were important for their roles.
Once the movies were all released and the Star Wars craze began to die down just a bit however the actors went on their different ways and sought out other roles and opportunities. Obviously the most successful of them was Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo and was reluctant to come back to the franchise for episode 7. He branched out in so many different ways that there was no comparison to his success among the others.
Carrie Fisher went on to do other projects as well and even though she didn’t attain the same level of fame as Ford she was well recognized wherever she went. Peter Mayhew didn’t do much, and neither did any of the other actors that had taken part in the films. Warwick Davis was perhaps one of the only other people that had marginal success in his career after the films, but Mark Hamill would eventually go on to star in a number of B movies and do voice acting parts that didn’t get him a lot of renown. He did show up at one point in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in a Star Wars-themed lightsaber battle in which he was the villain, but aside from that his career was pretty quiet.
But the reason he is the expert that one should go to for all things Star Wars is because his role as Luke Skywalker was what allowed him to become a known name in film history. It’s the one role he’s been able to ride this long and still be recognized for throughout the last few decades. In truth he’s become the expert because the original trilogy became his life, and because he was the only one that would have loved to see another one made. Ford and Fisher were not initially on board for a new trilogy, but Fisher came back a great deal quicker simply because she too wanted to see the story continue. With the others coming back it was still Hamill that people deferred to in terms of the original story and how it all came together.
He’s been the man when it comes to Star Wars since he was so completely immersed in it for so long, and remains so to this day. While he’s not quite as knowledgeable as George Lucas he’s still the expert that many should be looking to in order to find out what they want to know.
