All fans of “Vice Principals” can take a half breath and temporary sigh of relief because the series is coming back for a second season. There has even been a trailer released to give us an idea of what to expect from the upcoming season, but…it’s not all good news. Danny McBride has informed us that the second season will also be its’ last, so you’d better not miss an episode because we’re surmising that the writers are going to pack it as full as possible, particularly as the season comes to its close. Here is what we know about season two so far.
Expect a complete story to unfold
We can’t really complain about the ending of the series because we were forewarned. McBride had disclosed at the season premiere that the entire series would consist of 18 episodes. What the writers are doing is telling the story within a single school year. It wasn’t intended to go beyond this from the beginning, so we were warned before we really got that into it. Does it diminish the value of the series? Not in the least. It’s like getting to watch a movie in weekly installments, with a long intermission in-between seasons. The show was actually written in 2006 by McBride and Jody Hill as a screenplay. It wasn’t long enough, so more work was done on the project and it was neatly divided into 18 installments that were suitable for framing a limited series. Filming has been completed for all segments and there are no more to be made.
Premiere date
HBO announced that the second half of the second season is set to premiere on September 17. It’s divided into spring term and the fall session consisting of the remaining nine episodes. Dr. Belinda Brown, played by Kimberly Hebert Gregory will be back and so will Mr. Gamby, the lover of rules.
Chance of a continuation?
It’s a good idea to be prepared for the limited series to end with finality. McBride has made it crystal clear that all of the filming is completed and this is going to be it period. He nixed any notions of a continuation. the series is intended to be more like a movie and when it ends, it’s over. On the plus side of the pending finale, this is not going to end up being one of those shows that goes on and on, far past it’s life expectancy. Nobody is going to get tired of it and it won’t become outworn. We should just enjoy the remains until it is over. We can expect to see the characters play out their roles for the remainder of the school year.
In the last nine episodes before “Vice Principals” ends, we do expect to see a little drama among the staff. We’re not being told what exactly is coming, but we can be confident that it is going to continue on with what it started. The characters will be more fully developed and we can expect to see a few dramas and surprises before the final curtain call. How could it be otherwise?
