Summer camp. It’s all about having fun, learning a thing or two, and getting to know your fellow campers. Following that it’s about getting into all kinds of trouble and just having a wacky, hilarious summer. There are so many different types of summer camps nowadays that picking one is kind of difficult unless you know exactly what you want. Plus the total cost of each camp has gone up throughout the years to a ridiculous degree. The camp has to have funding though to take care of the campers and they have to have campers to get funded. It makes sense. In movies summer camp is a time for hilarity and troublemaking more often than not, and that’s why we watch, right? Well, it’s why I watch.
Here are some of the best films about summer camp that show why we love it and why it’s the best place to be during the summer months.

You had to know that this film was going to make it onto this list. It’s one of the all-time classics after all. Bill Murray is one of the funniest guys alive and has been since his Saturday Night Live days. Playing as the head counselor of Camp North Star he inspires, he conspires, and he does everything he can to motivate his campers so that they can rise up and defeat their rivals, Camp Mohawk.

How in the world could you not possibly pick up on the fact that the person you met and can’t stand has to have something in common with you that goes beyond a mere coincidence? Oh wait, it’s Disney, so of course we’re all supposed to play along. Cynicism aside this was a cute movie if slightly overdone and a little over the top. It was still one of the better kids movies in its time.

If you were ever looking for the perfect example of fat shaming then look no further. This film goes into great detail about getting down on every kid within the camp that just can’t seem to lose the weight. Ben Stiller is the perfect bad guy that goes so over the top that you’d likely want him locked up if he ever did become a camp counselor.

A great memory of this film comes from having driven with the family across the United States hitting every KOA campground along the way. You know what film they showed for the kids at EVERY single KOA that summer? Ernest Goes to Camp. Like a lot of kids I can recall watching this movie so often that I had just about every word and every move memorized. In truth it was about the best Ernest movie ever, which isn’t saying much.

Did you really think this wouldn’t make the cut? This is after all one of THE premiere summer camp movies. Obviously it’s not all happy go lucky like the others, but it’s still a summer camp movie that we all remember and enjoy. The remakes, not so much.
So 4 out of 5 are uplifting. The fifth is just, well, it’s a classic.
