Los Angeles seems to be the place for detectives doesn’t it? Whenever and wherever there’s a crime or an opportunity for one they seem to be there. Whether it’s the present day or the future the detectives just seem to come out of the woodwork in LA. A lot of them in movies just seem to be background that are there to support and bolster the main actors, but some of those have been able to break through that barrier and become the star. Those listed below have worked long and hard to become the actors they are today.
LA detectives are known to be some of the hardest and most toughest individuals in the movies.
5. Alonzo Harris – Training Day
The cop that’s willing to cross the line between law and order can sometimes be a lot worse than the criminals. Alonzo’s arrest record is stellar, but it’s more likely this is the case because he uses criminals to catch criminals. You might think this is okay largely because informants are used all the time in cop shows, but the manner in which Alonzo does it defies any rational explanation. He’s a part of the underside of the law that will do anything to get the job done.
4. Jack Traven – Speed
He’s kind of a jerk sometimes, but despite this he’s a good cop and capable human being. His one failing is that he’s not the brain of the operation, his partner is. If he’d had his partner on hand in the bus there’s no telling how things would have come out, but there’s a chance that his partner would be alive and they’d have figured out how to outfox the villain sooner. But then there wouldn’t have been much of a movie left.
3. Lt. Vincent Hanna – Heat
Vincent Hanna is the guy you don’t upset if you want to keep your pants clean and fresh-smelling. He might not be very imposing due to his size, but his temper is like a summer storm, there and then gone in the blink of an eye. The unfortunate part is that it is very destructive and doesn’t leave a lot untouched in its wake. It’s best to stay on his good side, if he really has one.
2. Rick Deckard – Bladerunner
Somehow he always seems to be outmatched no matter who he goes after. If he can fight from a distance he’s good, but up close, a replicant seems able to take him out without much trouble. They are stronger, faster, and in some cases more crafty, but when your job is to hunt them it would pay to be able to stay one step ahead of them if possible.
1. Martin Riggs – Lethal Weapon
You just don’t want to mess with Riggs. The guy can go megaton and forget the fact that he’s a cop if you push him too hard. The initial scene on the tree lot is enough to tell that this guy’s sense of mental balance has long since tipped into deeper, more troubled waters. As a criminal it’s probably wise to just give up before Riggs gets to you, otherwise there’s really no telling what he’s going to do. A Three Stooges slap and eye poke would be just the beginning.
LA detectives in movies are supposed to be hard, tough, and ultimately ready to throw down whenever possible. Thankfully this could mean in a physical or mental matter since not all of them are as equally capable of overpowering the bad guys.
