It’s a powerful message that is sent with this song, and a lifelong lesson that too many people don’t ever seem to learn. Of course living in a world that suddenly has a huge case of the gimmees it’s bound to happen that people forget the simplicity of living without. The Rolling Stones were kind of ahead of their time when they came up with this track, and were right on the money when they spoke the words. Too many times people seem to forget that no matter how much you want, you’re only going to get what you can.
It’d be wise to recognize when you get what you need.
5. LOL
If ever the meaning of this song was in doubt then it becomes extremely poignant when applied to a teenager-driven film. You can’t always get what you want in high school despite wanting it so bad that it feels like your life is about to end if it won’t come to you. This time of transition is a messy, loud, and furiously confusing time that a lot of parents tend to go gray over.
4. Middle Men
What a way to remember the early days of the internet. Can any of you recall that sound of the dial up service connecting? It sounded like a fax machine going through puberty didn’t it? Back the internet was still relatively new and wasn’t the fast, efficient thing it is today. Don’t snicker, especially if you can’t remember a time when the internet wasn’t quick.
3. 21
You can’t always get what you want, but when you do, the problem is that it’s not enough sometimes. Greed is easy but it’s not always good as Gordon Gekko would have said. In this case it’s about the most dangerous thing you can be. Think about it this way, casino’s are like big, overbearing bullies that don’t mind letting you play so long as it benefits them. When they start getting crushed then they tend to get a little bent out of shape, like your fingers will soon be.
2. The Hoax
So you didn’t get the book deal you wanted as an author? Get over it and keep writing if it’s that important to you. Or if you have no trouble getting caught in the long run and taking the short term way out by lying to millions of people then write something that’s completely false. Oh yeah, the one thing about that is, there’s always going to be someone there to call you out.
1. The Big Chill
Rekindling with old friends can be great, so long as you remember that times now won’t always be as times were in the past. You’ve grown, you’ve changed, and the world has changed around in the process. That doesn’t mean your friendship will ever go away, it simply means you need to mind the world the way it is now and pay attention. As this group of friends learn they can’t have things back the way they want. But right now, they have everything the way they need.
Even if the song isn’t represented in the clips, the feeling and message certainly is, and it’s loud and clear.
