Ranking The Top 5 Narration Performances in Movies by Morgan Freeman

While Morgan Freeman is known for being an incredible actor, he’s equally well known for his amazing voice.  Freeman has a velvety smooth voice that is both soothing and animated. He is the perfect choice for narration in films, documentaries, anything, and had put his voice to great use over the years.   The aging star still has a strong and steady voice with a deep and distinctive tone that could melt butter.

Here are the top narration performances by Morgan Freeman in feature films specifically:

1. “Shawshank Redemption”

This 1994 film was Freeman’s first film narration job. He also starred in the leading role as Ellis Boyd Redding who went by the nickname “Red.” He tells the story of his incarceration and friendship with a fellow inmate who successfully escaped the prison and went on to live a successful life. Red decided to forego the prison break and served the rest of his sentence up until his parole was granted. The story is told through his point of view. The film was a great success and was nominated for seven Oscar awards. Freeman was also nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role, however; did not receive an award. His narration was of such quality that he became a popular choice for other such roles.

2. “War of the Worlds”

This 2005 film starring Tom Cruise was also narrated by Morgan. Steven Spielberg directed the film based on the H.G. Wells novel. The apocalyptic film gave it an atmosphere of intensity. There were few light moments throughout the movie. Freeman’s skillful narration further deepened the heaviness and sense of destruction that was the intended tone of the story. The film received three Oscar nominations and it became apparent that his narration was a definite asset.

3. “The Bucket List”

Freeman co-starred with Jack Nicholson in this 2007 film. The two men met in the cancer treatment wing of a prestigious hospital. Freeman is a mechanic by trade and Nicholson is tremendously wealthy. The two begin to converse and become friends when receiving treatments for their health conditions. Between them, they develop a bucket list of things that they would like to do before they die. They embark on remarkable journeys together. Freeman narrates the film and tells their story from his perspective.

4. The Love Guru

This 2008 film is a comedy film starring Mike Meyers, Justing Timberlake, Ben Kingsley and Jessica Alba. While it earned the distinction of being a film executed with poor taste, there was nothing to criticize about Freeman’s narration of the story. Was it bad? Yes, the film was somewhat of a disaster, but Morgan upheld his end of the deal and was the only salvation for the venture.

5. Conan The Barbarian

In 2011, Freeman was called upon to lend his voice for the narration of the latest “Conan The Barbarian” film. This film starred Jason Momoa and Rachel Nichols. It gave the film franchise a new twist, but was it was not that well received. So why would we include this along with “The Love Guru” in his top narrations? Regardless of how good or bad the film was received, Morgan’s contributions were stellar as always. If you cannot say anything positive about a film in reviews, if Freeman is the narrator, that will be one high mark.
