Tom Cruise has already confirmed that a Top Gun 2 is “actively in development.” He made the announcement on the Australian TV show Sunrise – a rather unexpected place to calmly reveal such news. “I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know. It’s happening. It is definitely happening,” Cruise told the program. “You’re the first people that I’ve said this to.” Here’s the video of his confirmation.

With scant detail on the film, aside from the fact that “it’s happening,” it was left to the internet to figure out the plot. Will Val Kilmer somehow return as Iceman? Is Kenny Loggins going to create a new song for the movie? Is the volleyball scene coming back?
Here’s the thing. I’m 100% against this movie for the sole reason that you can’t outshine Maverick and there’s a 100% chance some young guy is going to be brought in to be the next cocky pilot and I’ll bet that Maverick will mentor him or something along those lines. You can’t replace a young Tom Cruise nor can you replicate his character as an older guy. It’s just not nearly as cool. And I think we’re forgetting one major thing here. The original director, Tony Scott, isn’t alive anymore so I cannot possibly see how this is going to play out in a way that we all say to ourselves, “yeah, Top Gun definitely needed a sequel.”
Look, it’s Tom Cruise and I’m sure he’ll give it his all but I think I’m going to stay away from this one unless we have a sick cast and a director who will take this 100% seriously.
