It’s common knowledge that video games have not translated into movie success. However, that hasn’t stopped studios from repeatedly trying. The most successful video game movie franchise to date has been Tomb Raider, which is of course getting a reboot. And while Assassins Creed didn’t get the best reviews, many people think that it was a step in the right direction. Let’s see if producers can improve upon the formula. Queue in the video game movie that’s currently in development: Splinter Cell.
Who’s the big star here? Tom Hardy. The Oscar nominated actor is being thrown into the ring to try and transform the video game movie genre. The movie is being produced by John Wick producer Basil Iwanyk, who sat down with Collider to talk about why this movie will try to break the constraints of the genre:
The challenge of making Splinter Cell interesting was we didn’t have this IP with a very specific backstory. That allowed us to make up our own world and really augment and fill out the characters. I don’t think one applies to the other because I don’t think our movie will feel like a movie that came out of a video game, I think it’ll feel like a badass, Tom Hardy action movie, which is what we wanted.
Hardy’s character, Sam Fisher, is apparently a very interesting guy who is going to be thrown into situations we and the video game have never seen before. That’s something taken out of the Assassin’s Creed book. Apparently the screenplay for the film is coming along and as an added bonus, Tom Hardy is apparently a gamer himself.
Iwanyk said about Hardy:
He is a gamer. He’s also a guy who has a lot of friends in that world, not the gaming world but the Special Ops world. He wants to play this character really, really badly. That’s what makes it exciting for all of us because Tom playing this character is an event. We’re definitely going to make it a hard PG-13. No, it’s not going to be like [John] Wick, but it’ll bring it”
Clearly I and I’m sure the entire video game community remains skeptical, as we should. However, if someone can pull this thing off, it’s probably Tom Hard. We’ll keep you posted.
