Madam Secretary: An Earthquake Hits Venezuela. Will Visits Elizabeth.

Madam Secretary

Natural disasters. We can try to prevent them, but once it happens, it will happen. On tonight’s episode of Madam Secretary, a massive 9.1 magnitude earthquake hits Venezuela, killing President Suarez and his immediate predecessors. If this is not karma, I don’t know what is.

Aid workers from the U.S. arrive in Venezuela to help treat the injured. They never got the chance to do so as the gang took them hostage. It turns out that the Venezuelans do not like Americans very much. Though I highly doubt that the Americans are going to do much harm with a bunch of medical supplies.

Meanwhile, Will and his family came to visit Elizabeth, Henry, and the McCord children. Elizabeth got her brother a job where he will serve as a mentor to doctors who do what he used to do. The younger Adams seemed all for it at first, but after seeing what happened in Venezuela, he wanted to jump back into the action. Elizabeth tried to talk her brother out of it, but to no avail. What got through to him was when Will was saying goodbye to his daughter Annie. The little girl was used to her father leaving for extended periods of time, so she didn’t show any emotion. At least now Will can be with his family and not become an estranged parent.

Back to the Venezuela situation, the late President Suarez’s son has declared himself president. He wants the U.S. to publically acknowledge his presidency in exchange for the release of the American aid workers. President Dalton gave him want he wanted, and the aid workers brought back to the States alive and unharmed. In the end, the acknowledgement announcement turned out to be a trap for Suarez Jr. to release the aid workers. The U.S. appointed a man named Vela as the new president of Venezuela instead. Good one, Madam Secretary.

Nadine also goes through a process of an inner struggle when the late former Secretary of State Vincent Marsh’s widow Arabelle came to see her. Nadine wanted to tell Arabelle about the affair, but never got the chance. I understand Nadine wants to tell Arabelle the truth, but sometimes, things are best left unsaid. If she were to tell her about the affair, there’s no telling how Arabelle will react to the news.

It was a pleasant surprise to take a glimpse into Elizabeth’s childhood. Though it was a moment in time where things ended in a tragedy, there was a sense of closure at the end of the episode. Will blames himself for not being able to save their mother from dying after the accident. Elizabeth told her brother that their mother was more concerned about him being okay as she took her last breaths rather than putting the blame of not being able to save her on his thirteen-year-old shoulders.
