Superstore Review: “Spokesman Scandal” Turns Cloud 9 Into A Mad House

Superstore

Superstore is seriously on its game lately. Sometimes, shows can have successful freshman runs and then hit a “sophomore slump”. But Superstore, which recently received a full season pick-up, has only gotten better as it has continued. This week, they took something crazy and strange, and then made it stranger and crazier, with hilarious results.

This week on Superstore: The Cloud 9 spokesman, Kyle the Cloud, is arrested on charges of being a serial killer and marijuana possession. Worried about marijuana turning everyone into serial killers, Glenn decides to let Dina drug test everyone. Garrett and Sandra grow weary of hearing about Cheyenne’s baby at every turn. Mateo thinks that Jeff is into him, but can’t be sure. Amy and Jonah get into a “dare war” of sorts.

Seriously guys. I didn’t think this show could make me laugh any harder than it did last time around. Alas, they’ve outdone themselves again. It seems to be directly tied to the use of supporting players, and their prominence in the episode. At the beginning of the show, they relied more heavily on America Ferrera and Ben Feldman to carry the meat of the stories. But, they are making greater strides the more the rest of the characters get involved. Mateo, Garrett, Glenn, Cheyenne, Dina, and even Sandra all played first violin in this episode, and it worked really well.

They literally made Amy and Jonah do insane things while the other characters told the story. And it was hysterical! They did all the things that I wish I’d done during my time as a retail employee. Not only did it look like fun, but it landed. I kept expecting one or the other of them to back down from the next dare, but they never did. The more they embraced it, the more fun I had watching it. Feldman and Ferrera are oozing with comedic chemistry, and it’s so much fun to watch.

No matter what I watch on this show, I still wouldn’t put it past retail employees and customers. Insane things happen at big box retail stores every day, and I love that they captured  some of the fun things that happen there*, instead of just how awful it is to work there. The dialogue is so natural, and yet the things that come out of their mouths are so insane.

*Once, I had to do a Hulk Hogan impersonation (Ha. Ha. It’s funny because of my name) before I was allowed to take home the almost-expired orange juice. Still, it doesn’t hold a candle to these shenanigans.

As always, here are some of my favorite quotes/moments from the episode:

  • “We pretty much have the market cornered on serial killing. It’s one of the last non-integrated industries.”- Jonah, RE: White People
  • I really want a full version of “Cry Ezekiel Cry” from the Cloud 9 staff
  • “Is it insensitive that I’d rather be in Kyle the Cloud’s basement?” – Amy
  • “Stop bullying, Sandra!”- Sandra
  • After the marijuana conversation, they panned straight to an employee whose name tag said “Molly”. I see what you did there, Superstore.
  • “Please find our lead salesman, Charles” “Is there anything we should know about him?” “He’s in charge”- Best intercom prank yet.
  • “Jonah is an alarm clock. He’s just like, SO annoying in the morning”- Amy

Everything about this episode worked. There was physicality, sharp dialogue, and wonderful chemistry between each character. Just when I think Superstore won’t get any funnier, they top themselves again. I had a few sore stomach muscles from laughing at this one. 10 out of 10 would watch again.

What did you guys think? Did you enjoy this episode? Let us know in the comments!
