Superstore is back in full swing, and it just keeps getting funnier. Seriously. Every episode I watch feels like it’s the funniest one yet. “Guns, Pills, and Birds” is a great depiction of working in retail, and has a lot of fun with the world of the big box store. Aside from that, it’s a heck of a lot of fun.
This week on Superstore: Jonah is assigned to work the gun counter, but makes trouble for everyone because he’s morally opposed to it. After Jonah’s protest, Glenn tries to stop the sale of the morning after pill in the store. Amy is excited to have a weekend to herself at home, but it hits a snag. Garrett is attacked by a crow in the store, so Dina and Mateo team up to try to get it out.
One of the best elements of this episode was the physical comedy. People who haven’t worked retail probably don’t know (boy, do I envy those people by the way) how physically demanding a job like that can be. You’re on your feet for hours at a time, with very short breaks, and you have to lift heavy things, move things, and stock shelves like your life depended on it. Superstore does this wonderful thing where it manifests the physicality of a retail store into the show, and uses it to hilarious ends. In this episode, everything related to the crows was hysterical. Garrett’s reaction. His fear. His getting trapped in the tent with them. Coming around to them just as Dina scoops one up. Mateo “taking care of it.” Every element of physical comedy worked to perfection in this week’s episode.
Perhaps my favorite part, though, was the exploration of political issues without diminishing one stance over the other. It’s so hard for comedies to toe that line between being funny and taking a stance. Parks and Recreation, though it was one of my favorite shows, toed this line a little too often for my liking. But Superstore struck the right balance. Jonah and Glenn both had specific political stances, but neither one came to blows over it. It created issues at the store that were able to be resolved. Politics in comedy can be a huge turnoff for me, but Superstore had a masterful balancing act.
As always, here are some of my favorite quotes/moments from the episode:
- “I’m keeping a list of all the crazy white person stuff you say.”- Garrett
- Garrett’s freak out over the crow.
- Jonah’s freak out over the gun.
- “A.) ‘Cause they’re dirty flying dinosaurs, and B.) you don’t need any other reason.”- Garrett
- “Can you guys just act like adults and have an affair or something?”- Garrett, just pointing to something everyone else already sees
- “Oh my god just bang already!”- Mateo, same subject
- Dina’s “crow predator” noises were the best
- My favorite moment: Garrett going in the tent with the crows. Gold.
This episode was an excellent combination of the physical and verbal comedy, and I loved every second of it. Superstore is one of the truly great comedies on TV right now, and I hope everyone is watching. It’s not like me to rave about a show two weeks in a row (with a few exceptions, of course) but Superstore deserves heaps of praise and Grandma’s cooking!
