Every year Comic-Con brings an embarrassment of riches in terms of spoilers for the upcoming television season. This year TVOvermind was able to sit down with the Executive Producers of Lucifer, Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich. They talked about the biggest differences between Season 1 and the upcoming Season 2, what Lucifer’s relationships are after being resurrected by his father in the season finale, and the introduction of the character the devil himself fear in the final minutes of last season-‘Mom’.
Executive Producer Joe Henderson talked about season 1 being a learning lesson, whereas Season 2 will be much in the same theme of the episodes in the latter end of the first season. “Season 2 has been easier because the characters kind of tell you where to move them around” Modrovich echoed. There will be more interaction between the supporting characters, more incorporation of the mystical elements of the comics, all of which will be tied together by the cases Lucifer helps the LAPD with. “What I love about the cases is that they give Lucifer a chance to explore the desires of humanity and how they reflect on himself” Henderson says of the show’s structure.
Then there’s the devil in the room, the ominous single syllable that’s been floating around in anticipatory fear for all since the season finale: Mom. Played by new regular cast member Tricia Helfer, Charlotte is definitely someone to be feared, but there’s so much more to her than that. “The first day she [Helfer] exceeded my expectations on her take on the character. She has such complexity” says Modrovich. Turns out Charlotte still has a lot of love left for God, as she speaks of him with “whistful longing” rather than anger. Well, at least not complete anger. Charlotte’s feelings for humanity are a whole other matter. According to their history “Mom and Dad created angels together, and then dad kind of went into his garage and started tinkering with this little project called humanity and Mom got a little jealous, therefore they clashed. It’s kind of the root of their split.” So don’t expect Lucifer’s mother to be as happily intrigued by humanity as her son.
There is no doubt Mom’s return will send shockwaves, but there is a slight possibility that she may not be returning alone. When asked if other demons would be paying a trip to Los Angeles to follow Charlotte, several of the cast members clammed up rather quickly. Responses to that particular question went along the lines of ‘if we told you we’d lose our jobs’.
Beyond the mystical side, there is still some fun to be had. Dr. Linda will be around to counsel Lucifer, but given how Lucifer has been taking her counsel “There’s a question of whether or not this is working” says Henderson. Later in the season the audience will get to see Dr. Linda jump in on a case with Chloe and Lucifer. “We have Maze, Dr. Linda, Chloe, and Ella all together on a Ladies Night. It’s such a relief because we realized how different they all were” says Modrovich. She also is not ruling out a dance or music-themed episode given that everyone in the cast has a range of talents in that area. “We try to use everybody’s hidden talents in the show as much as possible.” Therefore there will definitely be a large enough mix of mystique, madness, and fun for audiences to enjoy when Lucifer returns this fall.
