Liam Hemsworth stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night to promote Independence Day: Resurgence, which, as Colbert pointed out, doesn’t hit theaters on July 4 but the weekend before on June 24. However, during their conversation, Hemsworth and Colbert talked about many things that had nothing to do with the film, such as the fact that they’re both the youngest brothers in their families (Hemsworth is one of three brothers, while Colbert is one of eight) and that Hemsworth’s father used to wrangle water buffalo at their cattle station (kind of like a ranch but more remote).
The two of them really had a lot of fun, though, when discussing how Americans view Australia and what they get right and wrong about the country. For instance, when Colbert brought up how dangerous Americans thinks Australia can be, Hemsworth didn’t argue, saying that it’s “100 percent true.”
“Lots of deadly snakes, a few deadly spiders, big sharks, big crocodiles,” he told Colbert. “And you know, you just gotta fight your way through life.”
But while Americans may have it right about how dangerous Australia can be, that doesn’t mean that they have all Australian practices correct, and one stereotype that Hemsworth hears all the time and can’t stand is “shrimp on the barbie.” As he explained to Colbert, Australians don’t even call shrimp “shrimp”; they call them prawns, and they never barbecue them–they’re mostly boiled. I guess that “putting prawns on the boil” just doesn’t have the same ring for most Americans.
