Quantico‘s characters have made it one of the more intriguing dramas on TV this fall. Let’s take a look at this week’s new episode, “God.”
The episode opens as footage of Alex carrying a box days before the terrorist incident is released to the public, furthering the perception that she is the one behind what happened (despite the video she released last week). She, however, has convinced herself that Caleb is the most likely suspect, and she’s starting to gain some support among those who are attempting to help her. As I’ve mentioned before, Quantico is doing a really great job so far of having the events of each of its timelines play off of each other instead of simply teasing what’s to come, and that’s something that continues this week. In the future, Alex is trying to use FBI surveillance to help clear her name, and the lesson this week at the academy is, in fact, on surveillance. It would be easy to look at this plot convenience as a negative, but I really do view it as a positive because, in my opinion, it aids the narrative structure much more than it weakens it.
The future timeline of Quantico seemed to take more screentime in “God” than it has in previous episodes, and it was a nice change of pace. It’s important for us, as the audience, to understand that there is a larger story at play at all times, and the academy lessons, while incredibly fun to see, tend to have lower stakes than the events surrounding the bombing that happens later on. It’s good to see that the pacing in both storylines will continue to be as fast as ever.
As always, the characters remain Quantico‘s strongest element. They continue to draw the viewer in, and we are still incredibly interested (for the most part) in what will eventually happen to them. This is true for even the more unsavory characters on the cast, and I am more impressed each week at the skill of the actors on the show. They all, more or less, have credits to their names, but this is the biggest gig that plenty of these young actors and actresses have so far had on their resumes. I hope that the strength of the acting on Quantico leads to a ton of opportunities down the road for those on the show.
I’ve talked plenty of times before about how the lessons that are shown at the academy are incredibly fun to watch, and that continues to be the case six episodes in. It’s very cool how the context of the FBI academy in Quantico can strengthen the background of unrelated characters all over television and film by showing us similar experiences to what they themselves may have gone through. The lessons also continue to be incredibly engaging, and I am still really enjoying this fictionalized look at FBI training.
Quantico has remained consistent throughout its first six weeks on the air, and “God” is another strong entry. The writers have finally started to show that they’re ready to mix the formula up (even if only a little, for now), and I’m excited as ever to see how the story progresses from here.
