It is summer time and that means that MTV’s hit series Teen Wolf is finally back. Last night, the series kicked off Season 5 with, as you would expect from a Jeff Davis-written episode, a bloody and gloriously bang.
Something that I didn’t expect from the premiere was how focused it would be on Lydia, even though her parts are mostly featured in the start and end of the episode. In fact, it was surprising how large of a time jump Teen Wolf had taken since the end of Season 4. But with the show being in its fifth year, it was only a matter of time till they had to catch up and get these kids into their senior year. Seeing Lydia now having been committed and trying to escape, where she demonstrated that she has been doing some physical training, was very satisfying (until she got caught), because Teen has been able to do so much more with this character up until now but has always felt the need to not utilize her potential completely.
The premiere really made you look back at the series as a whole and how much some of these characters have grown and changed since the pilot. Tyler Posey impresses me every year, because out of all the character this show has, Scott’s journey has been the clearest; plus, it’s remained compelling, season after season. It’s always fun to see a show’s main character go from one place to another, and in “Creatures of the Night,” it felt good to see Scott being the person that is finally leading his friends. While Derek’s absence is noted, it’s great to see that transition for Scott. When it came to the other characters, it was emotional seeing Stiles having his fears of being possibly apart from the gang after graduation. It’s a universal feeling and a great real life commentary to get even in a show that is typically much more focused on these kids’ supernatural adventures.
It took a while for me to get intrigued by the mysterious mutant-werewolf, because from everything that we had heard about this new season, the new big bad would be somewhat connected through techs; however, maybe it was just a misinterpretation on my part. It wasn’t until we met the three masked doctors, “the Dread Doctors” that the werewolf was working for, that it got more interesting. But overall, this was an underwhelming season premiere villain. Although his encounter with Parrish got me more interested in what the heck this deputy really is: is he just a very rare form of werewolf that has yet to wolf out? Also, let’s just all agree that we should keep a very close eye on Scott and Stiles’ old friend Theo, a beta that is now wanting to join the pack.
Finally, there was the twist at the end, where we see Lydia at the Eichen House being examined by a creepy doctor (that looks freakishly a lot like Alfred from Gotham), and it’s then when we learn that where Lydia is: it’s the PRESENT. All the things with the other characters that we saw were just in the past and we see some pretty gruesome flashbacks of what happened to some of our heroes. Bless MTV for airing the second episode tonight (at a special timeslot at 9/8c), because no way I would be able to wait a whole week for the next episode to get some more explanation.
Teen Wolf airs on Mondays at 10/9c on MTV.
